Who We Are :
Our client, the SPCA of Southwest Michigan has been dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens since 2002. Their goal is to end senseless animal euthanasia and provide all animals with a loving and caring home.
How This Position Supports Our Mission :
This position will be responsible for coordinating the medical operations of our facility. This includes oversight of our facilities, internal systems, and policies & procedures. This role will oversee all aspects of our medical care, kennel / animal care, and staff development.
Job Responsibilities :
- Implements ongoing process improvements to enhance animal care and the organization's ability to provide exceptional customer and animal care services.
- Oversight of our DVM medical staff to ensure proper scheduling and care is provided to our animal population.
- Responsible for the hiring, supervising, and employee relations of operations staff.
- Oversees Kennel Manager to ensure shelter operations and records comply with all laws and regulations to provide a safe environment for our animals.
- Oversees the inventory of shelter supplies and equipment to assure that appropriate quantities of all supplies are available. Regularly researches new products, equipment, and pricing.
- Facilitates staff discussions with the Executive Director about complex animal concerns and decisions regarding placement decisions, behavior plans, and other animal-related concerns.
- Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local ordinances, and required licenses, including DEA and licenses of medical professionals.
- Handles animals during medical procedures, including proper restraint and safety
- Works with animals for procedures, takes vital signs, and prepares vaccines.
- Performs patient treatments ordered by the veterinarian.
- Maintains all surgical equipment, surgery packs, surgical inventory, cold trays, and the surgery prep room and surgery suite.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities :
Commitment to our mission and vision of providing all animals with a loving and caring home.The equivalent of a 4-year degree in a closely related field and five (5) years relevant experience with demonstrated success in animal shelter management. CAWA certification preferred or ability to acquire within first 24 months.Demonstrated success in managing and directing teams in a safe and engagingExtensive knowledge of county, state, city, and federal laws and regulations relating to shelter operations including employment and safety regulations.Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to helping others reach their full potential with the ability to work in an emotionally taxing field – a positive life outlook and sense of humor are preferred.Demonstrated ability to build a strong team environment and positive working culture.Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate with staff, volunteers, adopters, and other members of the public in a consistently professional and educational manner.Experience with commercial facility maintenance and equipment.Additional Information :
This position is in Kalamazoo, MI with working conditions including kennel and office environments. This position is required to be onsite and in-person only.This position may include nights and weekends.This position has a physical requirement of lifting 25 pounds for 50 feet with the ability to repetitively use the hands to move animals and appropriately restrain cats and dogs and control dogs on a leash.Ability to lift and carry 25 pounds for 50 feet; bend and reach; work in an environment with daily changes in climate.This work is performed in an animal shelter. Potential for exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations (working outside), high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, animal waste, hazardous chemicals or chemical materials requiring OSHA Safety Data Sheets, anesthetics, sharp objects, and potential hostile persons and / or dangerous and fractious animals.Disclaimer :
