What to Expect
As a member of the Cell Physics Modeling team, this engineer will develop and sustain advanced physics-based models capturing mechanical and coupled mechanical-thermal-electrochemical behavior in lithium-ion cells. The engineer will also lead the design of experiments to test, validate, and implement new design concepts in partnership with other engineering and manufacturing teams.
What You'll Do
- Advance the capabilities of Tesla's cell mechanical models
- Develop material user subroutines and / or user elements for cell models to capture the fundamental physics and correlate with the test / literature data
- Propose proper cell test plans and perform model validations with test data
- Enhance the accuracy of Tesla's in-house and vendor cell models
- Translate cell mechanics to mathematical representations that can be used to develop / integrate to ROM models
- Contribute to the automation of cell modeling workflow
- Develop and perform component / cell level mechanical tests and material characterizations
- Interface with the cross-functional teams to determine ideal cell designs for different electric vehicle and energy product applications
What You'll Bring
Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or equivalent experienceStrong background in solid mechanics, especially in Elasticity, Plasticity, Plate, and Shell, as well as Fracture MechanicsStrong background in finite element theory and material constitutive modelsExperience in Finite Element model generation, development, execution, and validation (Abaqus, LS-DYNA, or equivalent)Data analysis skills in a scripting language (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent)Experience in test development, execution, and analysisExperience in material characterization and modelingKnowledge of battery cell mechanicsSome experience in solving multi-physics models in mechanical engineering discipline is preferred.
