About Us :

The Ohio Department of Health Violence & Injury Prevention Section (VIPS) is a comprehensive, state-level injury prevention program aimed at helping every Ohioan live his or her life to its fullest potential by reducing death and disability associated with intentional and unintentional injury.

  • VIPS coordinates surveillance systems that collect and disseminate injury data; assesses the burden of injuries and violence and communicates that information for the purpose of action;
  • promotes evidence-based, injury prevention intervention for at-risk populations; coordinates and collaborates with partners in building program infrastructure;

encourages the adoption of evidence-based policies and programs that lead to the prevention of injury and violence; and provides technical support and training as needed.

Priority areas are child / youth injury, drug overdose and falls among older adults.

The Ohio Department of Health supports a hybrid teleworking model. This position may work a hybrid schedule at the discretion of the manager or supervisor, which will require occasional attendance in the office for training, meetings and other operational needs.

Employees must reside within a reasonable distance to their assigned headquarters for compliance with workplace reporting requirements.

Unless required by legislation, the selected candidate will begin at Pay Grade 33 , Step 1 of the OCSEA Pay Range Schedule ($30.

55 per hour), with an opportunity for pay increase after six months ($32.04) of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.

What You'll Do :

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) is hiring for one (1) Epidemiology Investigator 3 in the Bureau of Health Improvement and Wellness (BHIW).

This position in dependently initiates, designs, proposes, and conducts epidemiological projects, research and investigations related to prevention of unintentional and intentional injuries in compliance with established procedures governing advanced epidemiologic work with a focus on Ohio-specific level of analysis.

It will provide technical advice and guidance on injury-related data collection methods and data findings to other employees and other agencies.

Epidemiology Investigator 3's provide lead work on safety practices relating to epidemiological investigations, control of infections, & chronic disease.

Additional Duties :

  • Monitors analysis of data to predict increases or decreases in injury morbidity and mortality.
  • Assists in evaluation of injury prevention programs.
  • Coordinates quality control for data management aspects of analysis, designs instruments and procedures for data collection and storage, and conducts computer based statistical analyses of data.
  • Develops appropriate research tools and research methodology.
  • Conducts data analyses and produces comprehensive injury reports.
  • Fulfills Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) grant requirements for data deliverables.
  • Tabulates and analyzes epidemiological data using standard and complex statistical measures and determines appropriate statistical methods for specific datasets.
  • Operates personal computer to apply appropriate statistical analysis and methods using statistical computer software packages (, SAS) designed and used for collection processing and reporting epidemiological data and statistics.

  • Completion of graduate core program in public health or preventive medicine;
  • 3 courses or 9 mos. exp. in use of statistical computer software packages;
  • 6 mos. exp. as epidemiology investigator with local or federal health agency;

  • must be able to provide own transportation.

  • Course work in epidemiology, biostatistics, health statistics, data analysis, mathematics : undergraduate
  • Experience in SAS
  • Experience in collecting, analyzing and interpreting statistical analysis of health (injury) related data
  • Experience managing and analyzing large datasets
  • Experience in developing public health surveillance reports and giving oral presentations
  • Experience in designing and conducting studies / projects / surveys to investigate health and injury issues
  • Experience in database and analytic software packages (, Access, Excel, ArcView- GIS, STATA, SAS, SPSS)
  • Experience in word processing and presentation software (, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with or training in the creation of data visualizations / dashboard using Tableau
