Engineering Equipment Operator
This position is under the Facilities Management Service, Cheyenne VA Medical Center. Cheyenne VA Medical Center was established by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1934. The campus has 25 buildings and 50.64 acres of land which is maintained by the Facilities department.
Responsibilities include operating heavy and light earth moving equipment such as frontend loaders, tractors with attachments, excavators, skid steers, and rollers to perform excavation, backfilling, grading, and piling to maintain roads, grounds, drainage items, signage, fencing, and other tasks throughout the campus areas. The incumbent also removes soil, stone, and other aggregates, works to rough grade and / or lines established by supervisor, grades surfaces on flat and rolling terrain, operates equipment by using clutches, levers, brakes, and valves to adjust according to the slope or grade of the terrain, and operates close to buildings or underground utility lines.
Additional duties include maintaining heavy and light earth moving equipment, completing log books and performing operators' maintenance on equipment including cleaning, lubrication, checking fuel and oil levels, etc. The incumbent assists in the repair of broken water lines, digs ditches, performs heavy moving tasks when relocation of offices or equipment is required, performs heavy shoveling and scooping to remove snow and ice accumulations from station roads, walks, and stairways, and assists other members of the unit in accomplishing repairs to the station sprinkler system.
The incumbent interprets and applies the requirements of technical manuals, shop directives, multi-view blueprints, and other documents to ensure proper piece of machinery required is ready to complete the job. Sets up and operates equipment to manufacturer specifications. Operates special purpose snow removal equipment such as snowplow, snow blower, loader, and trucks to conduct snow removal operations. Operates rotary snow blowers that are equipped with a separate power unit which activates the augers, impellers, and chute, and have dual, steering controls for front and rear wheels. Operates and maintains various auxiliary equipment such as mowing equipment, tractors with attachments, and forklifts. Performs operator maintenance of equipment including lubrication, cleaning, checking fuel and oil levels, tightening or adjusting loose nuts, bolts, ensuring proper adjustment of bulldozer tracks and other attachments, removing and installing tires on assigned vehicles using shop equipment, making repairs to damaged vehicle accessories, such as mirrors, and windshield wipers, and using appropriate shop tools and equipment.
Work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7 : 00 a.m. to 3 : 30 p.m. Physical requirements include heavy physical effort, constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. The operators are frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. The operators are exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. They are subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust. Exposed to below freezing temperatures in the winter and exposed to high humidity and high temperatures in the summer. Incumbent must wear appropriate personal protective equipment and follow safe work practices.
Requirements include U.S. citizenship, suitable for federal employment, determined by a background investigation, selective services registration is required for males born after 12 / 31 / 1959, selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process, acceptable forms of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements, valid state driver's license, and a one-year probationary period during which the employee will be evaluated for continued employment.
