Summary / Objective : A shipyard Marine Chemist focuses on ensuring safe work environments for hot work, confined space entry, and other tasks involving potentially hazardous materials. Marine Chemist analyze the air quality, identify potential hazards, and certify spaces as safe before work can begin. Marine Chemist have a critical role in preventing fires, explosions, and toxic exposures in shipyard settings.

Duties include, but are not limited to :

• Identify air quality using specialized equipment to test air in confined spaces for the presence of harmful gases, vapors, and other contaminants.
• Certify tanks and spaces as safe to enter after use, ensuring they are gas-free before hot work (Welding, etc.) can begin.
• Identify potential hazards, including chemicals, flammable materials, and environmental risks, to ensure compliance with regulations.
• Collect and analyze samples from ships and shipyards to assess air quality, identify contaminants, and ensure compliance with regulations.
• Assist in developing and implementing safety protocols and procedures, including emergency response plans.
• Maintain detailed records of work, prepare reports, and communicate findings to relevant parties.
• Will be involved in training personnel on proper safety procedures and providing consultation on hazardous materials management.
• Will work with shipyard personnel to ensure safety protocols are followed.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work : This is a full-time position requires 40+ hours of work per week. M-F 0600 - 1430 (or as otherwise assigned by General Manager) with pre-scheduled overtime as needed.

Work Environment : This job operates in an office environment and shipyard work environment.

Travel : This position may require ability to travel.
