General Statement

Performs supervisory professional structural engineering work in connection with the design, layout, preparation of plans and estimates and erection or alteration of structural steel, timber, concrete and reinforced concrete structures.

  • Assigns, supervises and reviews work of subordinate personnel; rewards, disciplines, directs or adjusts grievances of other employees or effectively recommends their hiring, transfer, suspension, layoff, recall, promotion or discharge.
  • Prepares and supervises the preparation of structural plans and specifications.
  • Initiates and responds to correspondence from contractors as well as other sections during design and construction phases of projects.
  • Prepares cost justification / comparison analysis of alternate plans and makes recommendations.
  • Oversees and prepares cost estimates and design calculations for structural components of projects.
  • Checks structural plans and details prepared by others.
  • Prepares design parameters for structural components of projects; coordinates the parameters with other sections.
  • Communicates with staff members from other departments and sections, contractors, and vendors.

Other Job Functions

Contacts municipal, state and federal agencies to prepare and request permits for authority to perform work within their jurisdiction;

coordinates assigned projects.

  • Makes field investigations and reports on conditions of structural components of facilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment and computer terminals.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of professional structural engineering criteria as it applies to the construction, operation and maintenance of sewage treatment plant facilities, sewer collection systems and flood control systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of structural design principles.
  • Thorough knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information in structural engineering.
  • Some knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of wastewater engineering.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to criticize and evaluate professional structural engineering design work.
  • Ability to develop detailed specifications, reports and designs from general outline assignments.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Absolute Requirements

Registration as a Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in civil or structural engineering and four years of full-time, post-degree structural engineering experience related to the District's activities.

Substitution

Full-time graduate study in the designated fields of engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.

Promotional Requirement

  • One year of service with the District as an Associate Civil Engineer or Associate Structural Engineer.
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
