Qualifications :

  • A four-year Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent and eligibility for an Alberta Teacher’s Certificate.
  • Specialized knowledge and training in at least two high school teachable areas, preference will be given to candidates with High School English and Social Studies specializations.
  • Experience teaching adults.
  • Experience teaching in a cross-cultural environment is an asset.
  • Experience living in rural, remote environments is an asset.
  • Experience building relationships with stakeholders on behalf of an institution is an asset.

Successful candidate must provide college or university transcripts proof of valid driver’s license to Human Resources prior to commencement.

This position is covered under the Collective Agreement between Northern Lakes College and the Faculty Association of Northern Lakes College.

Campus Instructor

Nature and Scope of Work

Northern Lakes College has a presence in many communities in north central Alberta, requiring the presence of campus-based instructors in most of these communities.

This position is responsible for planning, preparing and delivery of instruction and evaluation of learners at the preparatory and high school levels.

Campus administrative duties and responsibilities for student and community relations and adherence to college values, policies, procedures and regulations are expectations of the role.

Working as part of an educational team is also required as part of this role. This position is responsible to the Chair, Academic Upgrading.

Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction

  • Use a variety of teaching strategies to engage students in meaningful learning experiences.
  • Promote learning by following curriculum guides, incorporating appropriate activities and considering the experiential backgrounds of students.
  • Communicate with students in ways they can understand (oral, visual, kinesthetic) and by providing lessons and instructions through lecture, handouts, demonstrations, discussions, and simulations.
  • Keep accurate records of student attendance, marks, interviews, case conferences and other indicators of progress, and submit as required.
  • Collaborate with peers to enhance the instructional environment for students.
  • Provide students with approved course outlines in the first class.
  • Take remedial measures in light of Student Feedback Survey results by adjusting teaching and course plans.
  • Initiate and manage academic and behavioural intervention strategies as necessary.
  • Provide timely, informative feedback to students by returning marked assignments promptly and providing Progress Reports and other appropriate feedback as required.
  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, managing resources, and demonstrating respect for others.
  • Participate in professional development to stay current in the field.
  • Be a reflective practitioner.
  • Carry out professional duties in compliance with Alberta Education and the School Act.
  • Follow process such as the course outline process, and adhere to course outlines once the Dean has approved them.
  • Use materials that meet the individual needs of students.
  • Use educational technology to enhance student-learning experiences.
  • Distribute and collect student resources.
  • Meet instructional ratio of up to 75% of each day. (Instructional assignment 3 of 4 periods).
  • Maintain confidentiality of information by keeping student records and personal information secure and confidential.
  • Actively involve students in their learning by maintaining an interactive learning environment.
  • Submit student attendance, evaluations and reports as required.

Student Relations

  • Know the rights and responsibilities of students.
  • Show common courtesy and respect for individual differences, including cultural and special needs.
  • Encourage students to take pride in their performance and progress.
  • Use positive feedback, encouragement and constructive advice whenever possible.
  • Encourage students to review or reflect on their performance.
  • Establish expectations by organizing learning activities that provide for reflection.
  • Review Education Plans with students and help them develop clear goals and objectives.
  • Establish clear, consistent and reasonable expectations for student behaviour.
  • Be accessible to students by encouraging them to ask questions and seek support by spending assigned time in classes and being available after class for consultation.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students to help them overcome barriers.
  • Refer students to Counsellor or other resources as appropriate.
  • Be positive and helpful to other students and staff.
  • Assist students in accessing college services.

Campus Oversight / Administrative Duties

  • Perform administrative duties as required (example : create and maintain student education plan)
  • Submit student attendance, evaluations and reports as required.
  • Monitor supply inventory and request supplies in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Keep a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring classrooms and the campus is clean and by reporting unsafe conditions as required.
  • Serve as the primary contact for all activities, resources and services at the campus.
  • Inform students and the community about College services and programs.
  • Schedule and manage the use of the facilities, resources, materials and technologies at the campus as required.
  • Focus on campus responsibilities up to 25% of each day (Campus and administrative duties 1 of 4 periods).

Community Relations

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the community and the College.
  • Promote College services and programs to students and the community.
  • Represent the College to community stakeholders and groups.
  • Work with other community agencies, business and industry to identify education and training needs within the community.
  • Assist other College personnel to identify and report on community opportunities and training needs.

Adherence to College Values

  • Adhere to College policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Set professional improvement goals and work with supervisor in the performance appraisal process.
  • Consult and collaborate with other staff and supervisor to meet college goals.
  • Work as a member of the college team to overcome barriers to student success.
  • Attend meetings and provide input and feedback as required.
  • Contribute to the positive image of the college.
  • Be familiar with the mission, vision, values and mandate of the College.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience in online teaching environments
  • Proficiency in computer skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Self-directed problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Other skills may be required
