Overview
Conservation Program Manager at San José State University Research Foundation (SJSURF). The role focuses on leading multi-benefit water resource projects in the Monterey Bay Region, with emphasis on habitat restoration, flood protection, and climate change adaptation. The position sits within the Central Coast Wetlands Group (CCWG), an affiliate of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Multi-benefit Water Resource Project planning and implementation : Collaborate with the Watershed Coordinator to develop and implement projects in an agriculturally dominated landscape in the Monterey Bay Region.
- Planning, Design and Permitting : Work with ecologists, engineers, and other experts to design projects for flood risk reduction, groundwater recharge, water conservation, and water quality improvement.
- Stakeholder Engagement : Build partnerships with agricultural landowners, growers, local organizations, agencies, and disadvantaged communities to integrate their needs into planning.
- Facilitate Land Acquisition : Coordinate with land acquisition partners on acquiring land from willing landowners, including appraisal oversight, easements, and fee title acquisitions.
- Project Implementation : Coordinate with agency partners to move from planning to construction, including securing funding and on-the-ground actions.
Program Management
Support the program director in program operations.Strategic Planning : Assist in developing long-term goals and plans for program growth.Grant Writing : Prepare and secure grants and contracts.Budgeting and Financial Management : Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and managing program finances.Supervisory & Interpersonal
Reports to CCWG program director. The Conservation Program Manager supervises research associates, student research assistants, and interns.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Master's or PhD in environmental science, environmental planning, ecology, natural resource management, or related field.Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, preferably in land conservation, environmental restoration, watershed restoration, or water resource management.Experience collaborating with diverse partner organizations, including government agencies, non-profits, and / or agricultural communities.Experience in budget management and project reporting.Outgoing personality with ability to work effectively within a close-knit team.Adaptable, flexible, and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to evaluate program needs, track performance, and identify long-term solutions.Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of the Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program, Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, and relevant local plans and policies.Experience in water quality treatment, wetland design, restoration, and / or water quality treatment projects.Successful track record of obtaining extramural funding.Physical Demands
Ability to work outside in inclement weather when necessary.Ability to walk up to a mile with up to 20 pounds of equipment and traverse rough terrain to remote field sites.Ability to travel overnight occasionally for fieldwork, conferences, and meetings.Application & Benefits

Compensation range : $93,600–$114,400 annually, DOE / Q. Exempt, benefited.
