Medicine Pathology
- Anatomic Pathology Technician (AP Tech) who provides services in the Surgical Pathology Gross Room, which is a laboratory within the Division of Surgical Pathology, Department of Pathology;
- receives surgical specimens from hospital staff and couriers for gross and microscopic examination; confirms patient identity and specimen labeling requirements;
- triages specimens for diagnostic tests; prepares specimens for transport by courier; accessions all cases using surgical pathology software providing accurate associated billing for surgical specimens;
- retrieves tissue from various patient care areas throughout hospital; facilitates problem resolution for unacceptable specimens;
- performs gross examination of all biopsies and some non-complex surgical excisions; assists with the microtomy of frozen section slide preparation;
- assists with staining and coverslipping of frozen section slides; assists with permanent labeling of frozen section slides;
- answers laboratory phone; opens surgical specimens to allow for appropriate fixation; assists with storage shelf organization;
assists with inventory management; and assists with equipment maintenance and cleaning. OSU East Hospital Gross Room responsibilities also include receiving slides from courier, preparing slides and specimens for courier and filing slides.
Hours of work vary depending upon assigned rotation.
Minimum Required Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree to include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination required.
Training or experience as a tissue prosector desired.
