Job Description :
The Director / Senior Director of Development position is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding prospects for The McKnight Brain Institute, including foundations, corporations, alumni, colleagues and those interested in advancing the basic sciences through philanthropic support.
The emphasis will be on obtaining private philanthropic funding by individuals or foundations / corporations capable of making $100,000+ commitments.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Advancement, this position is responsible for implementation of a broad range of fundraising support programs to assist the MBI investigators in achieving their mission.
Additionally, the Director will also work collaboratively with the Executive Director for foundations and corporations in Medicine.
MBI Research focus includes but not limited to : addiction, brain cancer, breathing, psychiatry, aging, neurobehavior sciences, pain / sensory physiology, TBI, spinal cord injury and stroke.
Development
Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift prospects and donors for McKnight Brain Institute (MBI), including alumni, private foundations, corporations, colleagues, and faculty with a focus on gifts of $100,000+.
Partner with the chair of the MBI, researchers, administrators and collaborating physicians in identifying and cultivating prospects and in presenting needs and priorities effectively in written and oral communications.
Build an understanding of the research and priorities of the MBI and be able to present these concepts to internal and external audiences.
Build and manage relationships, utilizing a strategic moves management approach to yield maximum philanthropic support in a timely fashion.
Develop and present concept papers and major gift proposals, and acknowledge and recognize gifts in ways that are meaningful to donors and appropriate to the mission, vision, and values of UF.
Build effective relationships across disciplines and teams as well as work collaboratively to include MBI in institutional asks where appropriate.
Engagement
- Support researchers, administrators, and medical staff in identifying and referring prospects, and in presenting needs and opportunities.
- Initiate, plan, and support activities and events involving volunteers, donors, and prospects, both on campus and regionally. Travel required.
- Participate in UF Health and department-based alumni and development activities including but not limited to : alumni weekend, volunteer meetings, commencement, grand rounds, and donor recognition events.
- Partner with colleagues and leadership to develop new programs that will advance philanthropy for campaign and unit priorities.
Administrative
- Collaborate with the gift planning office on strategies for planned giving prospects.
- Ensure processes are in alignment with the Vision, Mission, and Values.
- Make sure best practices are used in office systems, files and record keeping.
- Ensure regular and effective use of strategic tools and resources, and prospect management, research, and analysis.
- Effectively perform prospect tracking, portfolio management, record keeping, file maintenance, and reporting using the Advance database.
- Perform related duties as required or deemed appropriate to the accomplishment of the responsibilities and functions related to this position.

Expected Salary :
Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience.
Minimum Requirements :
Master's degree in appropriate area of specialization and three years of appropriate experience in Development or a related field;
or a bachelor's degree in appropriate areas of specialization and five years of experience in Development or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications :
The ideal candidate will possess :
Three to five years of major gift fundraising experience with proven success soliciting major gifts of $100,000 and above;
strongly preferred individual, foundations, and corporate prospects.
- Prior experience in a college or university setting, enthusiasm for fundraising in a comprehensive research university, and the desire to work collaboratively within a goal-oriented fundraising organization.
- Prior experience fundraising for basic science medical department.
- Knowledge of fundraising principles, methods, and CASE standards.
- Expertise in developing solicitation strategies.
- The ability to work strategically, develop and implement constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers.
- Comfortable with a fast-paced environment and the ability to adapt to change.
- Competency in problem solving.
- Must be an outstanding communicator and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to work collegially and interact effectively with a diverse constituency.
- Proven success working with stakeholders; project management skills; experience in a data-driven environment; organizational skills;
and the ability to lead, influence and motivate others.
- Effective time management and organizational skills are essential for success in this position.
- Working knowledge in these areas : Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, internet browsers, E-mail programs, donor database, contact management, and tracking system.
- The ability and willingness to travel. A valid driver license and good driving record are essential.
