National Grid's Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a year-long development program for recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates will shape the future of National Grid. Bringing fresh thinking, new perspectives, and exploring with energy, we'll give you real responsibility and an opportunity to move with purpose from day one - putting the power to supercharge your career in your hands.

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 3-week in-person Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, you'll begin working in full-time position outlined below and take part in ongoing development activities including quarterly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Hackathon Project.

About the Position

Are you ready to dive into the world of engineering? As an Associate Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in delivering substation projects on time and within budget. You'll support our capital investment plan, work on distribution and transmission interconnection projects, and explore exciting new technologies. Your projects will include everything from equipment replacements to building brand new substations! Ready to engineer the future? Join us in shaping the energy landscape!

This is a hybrid position with a minimum of 2 days in office. This position can be based in Syracuse, NY, Buffalo, NY or Albany, NY.

What You'll Do

In this role, you'll have the chance to make a real impact. Here's what you'll be up to :

  • Engineering Pro : Perform preliminary and detailed final design engineering for transmission and distribution substations up to 345kV.
  • Documentation Guru : Create detailed technical scope and cost estimate documents for both internal and external design teams.
  • Report Writer : Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports on technical issues, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations.
  • Project Support : Assist Project Managers and support project management processes.
  • Estimator : Participate in project estimating and economic analysis to keep everything on track.
  • Collaboration : Coordinate with design consultants and work closely with our internal design staff.
  • Drawing Reviewer : Review project drawings, including those for manufacturers' equipment, to ensure everything meets our standards.
  • Consultant Manager : Oversee consultants' work to ensure compliance and technical adequacy.
  • Construction Support : Help with construction activities and project closeout to ensure everything wraps up smoothly.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in Electrical or Power Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Graduated between May 2025 and June 2026
  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program on June 8, 2026, or July 13, 2026
  • Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (such as sponsorship for an H-1B, TN, O, L, STEM OPT, or other employment-based work authorization)
  • It would be awesome if you had

    Salary Range

    Syracuse, Buffalo, or Albany, NY $87,000 - $102,000 a year

    You must reside within our existing footprint, which includes contiguous states (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont). Our hybrid working approach applies to all colleagues who have a role which has the flexibility to be done hybrid across the National Grid group. Operational requirements mean that not all roles are suitable for hybrid working. Managers are responsible for determining whether a role is conducive to hybrid working. A hybrid worker should also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to their assigned primary office.
