The City of Buena Park is seeking a highly motivated individual for the position of Public Works Inspector. The City of Buena Park operates a robust and exciting Capital Improvement Program. The Public Works Inspector plays an important part in the management of all City-funded and private construction projects. Types of project inspections include the installation of new sewer and water lines, storm drains, public buildings, park projects, major street improvements, and construction site inspections.

  • VARIED WORK SCHEDULE
  • Incumbent may occasionally be required to work varied work schedules throughout the year. Varied work schedules may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends with advanced notice.

Under general supervision, inspects public and private development projects, residential improvements and rights-of-way permit work; ensures compliance with city standards, municipal codes, plans and specifications; and does related work as required.

The Public Works Inspector reviews engineering plans and specifications and conducts field inspections of private and public construction projects. The Public Works Inspector is distinguished from the Senior Public Works Inspector, who performs more varied and complex inspections, often involving larger-scale projects.

1. Inspects capital improvement projects, including street, sewer, water, storm drain, traffic signals, and public buildings.

2. Reviews preliminary job plans, specifications and contract documents.

3. Coordinates construction work and procedures.

4. Studies and compares layout, materials and dimensions with construction drawings, blueprints and rights-of-way permit requirements.

5. Coordinates work with contractors, developers, city department officials, utility companies and public agencies.

6. Prepares and maintains accurate and complete activity records and construction progress reports on a daily basis.

7. Attends project and professional meetings, including meetings with city, county, state, and Federal agencies.

8. Interfaces with residents, business owners, and the general public.

9. Responds to basic questions from public and business representatives concerning work being performed.

Knowledge of : Proper inspection methods associated with construction, private development and rights-of-way projects; streets and utility construction methods and materials; basic record keeping practices and procedures; basic principles of engineering and math; safety regulations including city standards, municipal codes, plans and specifications, and applicable laws and construction standards; effective customer service techniques.

Ability to : Read and interpret job plans, blueprints, specifications, work orders and schematics; follow construction surveying procedures; operate a calculator to perform basic engineering computations in preparing for daily reports; prepare and present administrative reports and staff recommendations; understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, management, contractors, developers, utility companies, public and private agencies, general public, and others in the course of work.

While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms above and below shoulder level. The position works in both field and office settings. The employee is required to frequently sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch to inspect sites. The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is required to lift and carry records and documents, typically weighing less than 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this class include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this class, the incumbent is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math; work with interruptions; and interact with officials and the public.

The employee works in both office and outdoor conditions. Frequent driving is required to conduct field observation of public works and engineering construction projects and work operations, attend meetings at various city facilities, training and meeting sites, and public and private events. The employee must be able to work around electrical currents and building materials in a safe manner and is frequently exposed to dust, heat, moisture, traffic, and variable weather conditions at job sites, including loud construction noise. The employee may work in confined spaces during inspections.

High School graduation or G.E.D. equivalent is required. Two years of experience in the review and inspection of city projects, private developments, public improvements, and rights-of-way permit work is required.

Valid Class C California driver license, acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance are required.
