Job Summary Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Assistant to join the Motta Lab in the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department.

This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of a one-year extension, contingent on additional funding and performance.

The ideal candidate would be able to start July 1, 2024. We are looking for a Research Assistant to assist with laboratory daily activities and potential fieldwork in the Amazon Rainforest.

The work involves the analysis and preparation of pelagic zooplankton samples for bulk mercury stable isotopes, phytoplankton experiments, and the development of compound-specific mercury isotopes.

There is also the possibility for fieldwork in the Amazon Rainforest in the fall of 2024 or early spring of 2025, during which we will collect samples to assess mercury cycling and exposure to native populations.

The Research Assistant must be hardworking, detail-oriented, and able to work independently with little supervision. The Research Assistant will work with and trained by Motta.

Examples of essential functions include : Maintaining phytoplankton and zooplankton cultures Acid cleaning Digesting samples for methylmercury analysis Operating the mercury analyzers Commit to a healthy workplace climate Essential Functions Research Assistant I : With close supervision, uses established laboratory procedures to perform prescribed research tasks determined by field of study and scope of individual research project.

Prepares data or material for analysis or presentation using standard research techniques; Processes and analyzes data according to established technical procedures;

Research Assistant II : With some supervision, employs established laboratory procedures, standard equipment, and fundamental concepts to conduct research tasks determined by field of study and scope of individual research project.

  • Executes designated research tasks, making use of selected laboratory experiments, equipment, field work, library research, data acquisition and processing, statistical analyses or other investigative techniques;
  • Organizes and summarizes acquired data, using scientific and statistical techniques including computer programs; Organizes and / or drafts material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, or other documents for publication and / or presentation;

Participates in the design of experiments or field work. The final level of the position will be determined commensurate with the selected candidate's level of education and experience.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : As deemed necessary by supervisor; must be willing to take on a variety of tasks regardless of levels.

Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in chemistry, Environmental Science, Oceanography, Biogeochemistry or related discipline.

Previous experience in laboratory and field settings is desirable. Physical Requirements Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift less than 25 lbs independently, 2 times per day;

carry 10-25 lbs, 2 times per day. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors.

Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier / dock, warehouse).

Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing / walking; use of hands for basic / fine grasping and manipulation, repetitive motion, reaching above and below the shoulders, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, and stooping.

Other occupational requirements include talking, traveling, working around others, and with others. Will be exposed to dust or other irritants and electrical / mechanical / power equipment hazards.
