Truck Driver/ Forklift Operator

Job Description

The Salvation Army Midland Division Thrift Store located in Columbia, Missouri, is looking fora Truck Driver / Forklift Operator.

This position will drive or ride on the truck, as well as working in the corps and stores, working with otherstaff and customers, lifting and carrying donated / purchased food and items and operating the forklift and the baler located at the thrift store.

The majority of the work done in the position will be of the physical labor type. Basic communication skills are required.

Qualifying candidate must pass a DOT medical exam within one week of employment, should be able to sustain heavy manual labor through full workday.

This is a part-time position of 25 hours per week that has a pay range between $14.50 to $14.95 an hour.

Essential Functions

• Drive or ride along in truck to pick up merchandise, including food, and make store deliveries as scheduled.
• Assist in loading and unloading the box truck, customers' vehicles, and / or donors' vehicles.
• When driving, conduct daily pre-trip inspections of the vehicle, monitoring and scheduling routine maintenance and alerting the supervisor of needed repairs or safety concern.

Operate the vehicle in a safe manner and in compliance with The Salvation Army Fleet Operation Manual.

• Other duties required when not driving :
• When riding, perform spotter function outside the truck each and every time the truck is backed up.
• After training, perform clothes baling operations in a safe manner (operate baler, move / stack bales which weigh up to 750 pounds).
• After certification, operate forklift in a safe manner, ensuring all stacked items are safely stacked. Monitor and schedule routine maintenance and alert the supervisor of needed repairs or safety concerns.
• Assist with maintaining the food pantry and stores to include : wash windows, dust, clean bathroom, vacuum and mop floors, carry out trash and other janitorial duties as necessary.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with Safe From Harm guidelines.
• Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with customers, donors, co-workers and supervisors.
• This includes but is not limited to such actions as : resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and customers;

respect of others' property and person; and professional and appropriate communication to and about customers, donors, co-workers and supervisors.

Education and Experience

• High school / equivalent diploma and one year related work experience or two years work experience without diploma.
• Position requires basic communications with customers and other employees.
• Ability to comprehend written job description, city map, cleaning instructions and material safety data sheet.
• Previous store worker experience is a plus.
• Appropriate state drivers' license is required at least a class E for MO and must pass TSA MVR check.
• It is required that anyone driving the box truck be DOT certified. Forklift operator certification must be obtained before operating the forklift.
• It is required that anyone operating the forklift be properly trained and have the appropriate license.
• Must be a team player, a self-starter, and perform well with minimum supervision.

Physical and Working Conditions

• Must be capable of performing the above essential duties.
• Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
• Capable of frequently lifting 70 pounds, and occasionally lifting more than 100 pounds.
• Frequently lifts or moves 100 pounds or more with assistance of another person / forklift / floor jack / dolly / cart or truck.
• Majority of lifting is from floor to waist high.
• Some lifting required above waist and shoulder high but it will be at a reduced weight.
• Position is expected to : Bend, stoop, crouch, stand, walk, carry and push / pull items.
• Most of this work will be outside.
• In the winter it will be cold and in the summer it will be hot.
