Senior Manager of Cell Product Engineering
We’re on the lookout for a seasoned Senior Manager of Cell Product Engineering to join our team. The role involves leading the Cell Product Engineering team in the design and development of custom rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery cells.
The ideal candidate will address challenging size, weight, power, and cost requirements (SWaP-C), as well as ensure the highest safety standards.
As the Senior Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the entire cell product development process. This includes developing specifications, evaluating and selecting materials, mechanical design, product validation, and strategizing the manufacturing scale-up.
The position requires a leader who can drive innovation and maintain a commitment to quality and safety throughout the product development lifecycle.
Responsibilities of the role may include :
- Strategic Development : Propose and generate technical solutions aligned with programmatic goals, addressing both government and commercial sectors.
- Project Execution : Lead the creation of work plans and test plans to achieve product development milestones.
- Resource Management : Manage cell coating and assembly resources, ensuring efficient intra-company and partner site operations.
- Risk Management : Collaborate with the program manager to identify and mitigate risks affecting technical quality, cost, and milestone timing.
- Reporting : Provide succinct technical progress updates in executive management meetings and ensure team compliance with key performance indicators.
- Communication : Present technical data and conclusions to internal teams and external customers, maintaining high standards for all written deliverables.
- Innovation : Foster invention disclosure and intellectual property management within the team.
- Presentation : Deliver technical papers and presentations at industry conferences.
- Maintenance : Uphold a clean and organized work environment and ensure proper maintenance of group equipment and assets.
- Safety and Compliance : Adhere to all company policies and safety guidelines.
- Preferred Experience : Design of Experiments training, government program management, and professional organization membership.
Educational Background :
- A Master’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or Materials Engineering, or a related field.
- A Ph.D. in Battery Sciences or Electrochemical Energy Storage is highly desirable.
- At least 15 years of engineering experience , with a preference for over 10 years in the battery or electrochemical energy storage sector.
- 10+ years’ experience in the battery industry , particularly in roles involving the management of US Government-funded R&D programs (DOE, DOD, etc.) is advantageous.
- A minimum of 5 years in a supervisory capacity .
Skills and Expertise :
- Willingness to work on projects funded by the US military and develop products for both domestic and allied military applications.
- Strong capabilities in technical creativity, solution development, and intellectual property creation.
- A proven history of writing technical proposals and securing program funding.
- In-depth understanding of the latest advancements in battery science and technology.
- Proficiency in Electrochemistry, Battery Science / Engineering, Materials Synthesis, and Processing Techniques.
- Familiarity with Electrode Mixing , Coating Processes , and Lithium-Ion Cell Assembly .
- Experience with Battery and Electrochemical Testing Equipment such as Maccor, Bitrode, Arbin, Neware, Solartron, Gamry, etc.
- Excellent project management and leadership abilities.
- Skills in cost estimation and client communication.
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Candidates should be detail-oriented, flexible, and possess strong communication skills.
- Experience in equipment procurement, setup, and maintenance is preferred.
- Training in Design of Experiments (DOE) or Robust Engineering is beneficial.
- Experience managing government-funded programs is strongly preferred.
- Active membership in professional organizations such as ECS or MRS is favored.
- A robust professional network including contacts in academia, national laboratories, and industry is preferred.
