Job Summary:

Vanderbilt Health - Executive Search Team is conducting a national search for a Chief Business Officer, Section of Surgical Sciences.

For almost 100 years, our mission in the Section of Surgical Sciences has been to provide the finest quality care to patients, solve surgical problems that change practice, and educate the next generation of health care providers.

The Section is comprised of eight Departments which are home to more than 240 clinical and research faculty, 118 residents and 19 fellows.

Clinical Programs

Our clinical programs are large and innovative. We perform over 26,000 operations per year at multiple locations throughout our system.

Each Department features expertise in high-complexity surgery. Notable programs occur across all the Departments. We have some of the largest and innovative adult and pediatric transplant programs in the country. Our adult and pediatric cardiac programs feature complex hybrid structural heart care and congenital cardiac surgery. Our vascular program specializes in advanced endovascular techniques. We are an American College of Surgeons designated Level I Trauma Center. Surgical oncology features innovative programs including the hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion program (HIPEC). Colorectal surgery excels in enhanced-recovery after surgery, shortening stays and lowering opioid use. Oral and maxillofacial surgery pioneered temporomandibular joint total joint arthroplasty and management of skeletal facial deformities. Neurological surgery delivers integrated cerebrovascular care, complex brain tumor, spine, and deep brain stimulation. Pediatric surgery provides complex oncologic care, fetal surgery, and national leadership in trauma. Plastic surgery excels in cleft and craniofacial repair, free-flap reconstruction, breast reinnervation, a growing multidisciplinary transgender practice, and hand surgery. Thoracic surgery specializes in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), diaphragmatic re-animation, minimally-invasive techniques, and lung cancer screening and treatment.

We are proud of our collaborations with multiple departments across VUMC. Notable among these are the NCI-Designated Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC), , and the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering (VISE), which brings new therapies and imaging technologies to patients.

We have a robust portfolio of research and innovation, with $20,000,000 in external funding across multiple domains including transplant research, organ preservation, cancer, trauma, and patient outcomes.

Our training programs are large and diverse covering the entire range of surgical subspecialties. Our graduates go on to work at the finest centers in the country.

Position Description:

This is an opportunity to have a major impact on the delivery of surgical care, innovation, and education at one of the nation's leading academic medical centers. The Chief Business Officer will work collaboratively with the Chair to find creative, efficient solutions to improve patient care, support discovery science, and train the next generation of physician leaders.

The Chief Business Officer will have responsibility in the following domains:

Key strategic partner for the Chair

  • Serve as a key strategic partner for the Chair for major decisions
  • Translate high-level strategies into actionable plans
  • Participate in departmental and institutional meetings and programs as a representative of the Chair
  • Ensure institutional policies and best practices are followed

Finance

  • Develop and manage complex budgets
  • Drive financial performance including revenue cycle, personnel, supply management, and faculty compensation
  • Produce timely and clear financial reports, analysis, and recommendations to the Chair, Departmental Leaders, and Institutional Leaders
  • Manage payroll and workday systems
  • Function as the contact point regarding departmental fiscal and administrative matters.

Personnel Management and Leadership

  • Lead, develop, and retain a strong staff
  • Develop reporting structures for optimal team performance
  • Work effectively with key leaders to achieve institutional and departmental
  • objectives
  • Ensure and support a diverse and inclusive workforce

Resource Management

  • Manage office and research space
  • Recommend distribution and allocation of departmental resources
  • Formulate and administer policies and procedures for management and maintenance of physical plant

Data

  • Manage data across the clinical, research, and educational missions

Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a Bachelors' degree and a minimum of seven years demonstrated strategic management experience including budgets, financial reports and the ability to navigate and interface with multiple departments in the organization and supervising direct reports.

Preferred experience and skills:

  • Strong understanding of academic healthcare systems and payor reimbursements
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a well-developed sense of diplomacy with dynamic groups.
  • Demonstrated administrative and financial leadership
  • Proficiency in financial and administrative software systems.
  • Professional work style with high level of problem-solving skills
  • Advanced degree in business or health services preferred
