Job description

General Summary of Position :

The Director for Development for Engineering plays a key role in advancing the philanthropic mission of the Francis College of Engineering. Under the direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and in direct coordination with the Senior Director of Development for Engineering and Dean of the college, the Director of Development for Engineering is responsible for prospecting, developing, soliciting and stewarding annual, major, planned and principal gifts in support of the college and university.

The Director of Development will manage a portfolio of 100+ prospects and donors and will develop customized engagement strategies that align donor interests with the priorities of the college and university. The successful candidate will be responsible for securing more than $1M annually over time and will be expected to conduct at least 144 meaningful donor meetings per year.

Essential Job Duties :

Engineering Fundraising :

  • Work closely with the Dean of the college, Senior Director of Development for Engineering, and Department Chairs of assigned engineering departments (Mechanical and Industrial, Chemical, and Civil and Environmental) to develop fundraising priorities, engage key major and principal gift prospects and lead projects that fulfill the fundraising priorities of the college.
  • Manage a primary portfolio of 100+ prospects capable of making a 5-7 figure gifts to the university. Develop and execute best practice fundraising strategies and long-range plans for the successful identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of the portfolio.
  • Conduct approximately 12 prospect meetings per month for the purpose of identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of current and prospective donors whose interest and financial capacity have the greatest likelihood of meeting college and university fundraising goals. Actively engage the Dean and other college faculty / staff in meetings with donors / prospects.
  • Be conversant in planned giving opportunities and engage donors in conversations about planned giving.
  • Partner with the Dean, Department Chairs, and the Senior Director of Development in recruiting, engaging, and fostering the growth of college and departmental advisory boards.
  • Maintain a timely record of donor engagement in CRM and other administrative tasks related to expenses, travel, etc.

Advancement Partnerships :

  • As part of corporate and foundation engagement efforts, collaborate with the Senior Director of Corporate Engagement and Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives to expand corporate and foundation support of the college.
  • In partnership with annual giving, support comprehensive annual giving efforts for engineering, solicit Chancellor's Leadership Society donors ($1,000+ annually), and participate in the university's Days of Giving.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across Advancement (Development, Alumni Relations, Advancement Services, Donor Relations, and Advancement Communications) to coordinate outreach, events, and donor recognition / engagement strategies.
  • Develop effective partnerships with co-workers in Advancement by freely sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.
  • College and University Partnerships :

  • Be fluent in the "menu" of engagement and philanthropic opportunities across the university. Advance key cross-campus fundraising priorities, including the Graduate School, Honors College, and Athletics.
  • Build effective relationships between the Advancement office and members of the Francis College of Engineering faculty and staff by sharing relevant information, offering assistance when needed, and supporting shared goals across the engineering and Advancement.
  • Ensure optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information.
  • Maintain an environment that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds, nationalities, and roles.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Associate Vice Chancellor.

    Minimum Qualifications (Required) :

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of five years of experience in sales, recruiting, fundraising, marketing or transferable skills.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to make direct requests for donations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of development practices and principles and a track record of success in managing major gift prospects, as well as, in closing gifts in at least the five-figure range.
  • Proficiency with computers and data management.
  • Additional Considerations :

  • High degree of grit and resilience with a positive "can do" attitude.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills across mediums, including video conferencing.
  • Strong collaboration and organizational skills, as well as the ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Willingness and strong ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Able to handle confidential material responsibly and interact professionally with a wide spectrum of individuals.
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Flexibility to travel, largely on a regional basis. Occasional weekend and evening work will be necessary, as well as national travel.

    Only Internal Professional (SEIU 888 Professional Union) Bargaining candidates will be considered during the first 10 business days of the posting. All other candidates will be considered after that period.

    This is an SEIU union, Professional position, Grade P22. Salary grade minimum : $103,747 25th : $119,309 and midpoint : $134,871.
