Position Information

SNRS invites applications for two 12-month, tenure track faculty positions, both at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are seeking dynamic individuals with a strong interest in both teaching (65%) and research (35%).

Description & Details :

Teaching (65% effort)

Teaching related responsibilities will be determined with each successful candidate, but they are likely to include a mixture of student advising, mentoring, and course instruction (4-6 courses per year).

SNRS phases in teaching loads of new faculty to give them the necessary time to develop stimulating courses while establishing their research labs.

Instructors will support coursework within a wide range of natural resource topics depending on their interest and expertise as well as SNRS’ needs.

This may include developing new courses in the instructor’s area of expertise, collaborations with current SNRS faculty, and / or contributing to existing courses related to natural resource management, policy, water, weather, or GIS.

Given substantial growth in online programs, the potential to teach online and hybrid formats is desired. Incorporating student research in the classroom as well as experiential and active learning techniques is also a plus.

Research (35% effort)

Successful candidates will develop a nationally recognized, collaborative research program that is appropriate for a 35% research appointment.

Research efforts should help support the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and North Dakota stakeholders, and candidates will be expected to produce peer-reviewed publications, secure extramural funding, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

We are searching for applicants with innovative research agendas in any area of natural resource sciences, including those that help strengthen or broaden SNRS’ current research expertise.

We encourage individuals with research emphases evaluating or restoring terrestrial or aquatic systems. However, we are excited to hear from any candidate whose work supports natural resources in native systems, agricultural systems, and / or their interface.

Work Schedule :

Full-time, 12-month appointment

Minimum Qualifications :

A doctorate in Natural Resources, a current SNRS discipline (Soil Science, Natural Resources Management, Entomology, Range Science), or a related field.

Candidates who are near completion of their PHD are also encouraged to apply, but a doctorate is required by the start date.

  • Potential for exemplary teaching.
  • Potential to develop and conduct original research related to natural resources.
  • Demonstrated verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Demonstrated experience with innovative pedagogical approaches and evidence-based teaching practices, including experiential or active learning in the classroom.
  • Experience advising and / or mentoring undergraduate or graduate students from various backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience in online teaching and learning formats, including synchronous and asynchronous delivery.
  • Evidence of relevant scholarly contributions, including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, grant writing, and / or successful acquisition of external funds to support teaching and / or research activities.
  • A commitment to working with diverse stakeholders and student populations.
  • Service to discipline or university, including engagement with professional societies.
