Are you a skilled and dedicated Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner with a passion for high-acuity care? Rapid City, SD, is seeking a motivated advanced practice provider to join our Trauma and Acute Care Surgery team for a long-term locum tenens assignment.

This is an exceptional opportunity to work in a dynamic, hospital-based setting at a Level II Trauma Center. You will be a critical member of the night shift team, working collaboratively with a supervising surgeon to provide outstanding care to trauma and acute surgical patients. This role is 100% inpatient with no clinic or office responsibilities, allowing you to focus entirely on critical patient care.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Provide first-assist support in a wide range of trauma and acute care surgical cases.
  • Manage and treat patients with various trauma conditions, including motor vehicle accidents, gunshot wounds, stabbings, and geriatric fractures.
  • Conduct daily patient rounds, including in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), to monitor progress and develop care plans.
  • Work collaboratively with the on-call trauma surgeon and other members of the night shift team in a supportive environment.
  • Handle a diverse patient population, consisting of 95% adult and 5% pediatric cases.
  • Perform procedures as needed; experience with chest tube insertion is a plus but not required.
  • Document patient encounters and care plans accurately within the EPIC EMR system.

Schedule & Contract Details :

  • Status : Locum Tenens / Contract
  • Shift : Night Shift, 5 : 00 PM – 7 : 00 AM
  • Rotation : Consistent block scheduling (e.g., 7 on / 7 off)
  • Qualifications :

  • License : Must have or be eligible for a South Dakota state license. (We will help with licensing!)
  • Certification :
  • Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) OR

  • Certified Nurse Practitioner (ACNP, or FNP with significant trauma / surgical experience)
  • Required Certifications : Active BLS, ACLS, and ATLS.
  • Experience : Proven experience in Trauma, General Surgery, or Acute Care Surgery is required. Strong first-assist (ORFA) skills are highly preferred.
  • Credentials : Must possess an active DEA and Controlled Substance Permit.
  • EMR : Proficiency with EMR systems; experience with EPIC is a significant advantage.
  • Work Environment :

  • Facility : Certified Level II Trauma Center.
  • Team : Work alongside one physician and one advanced practice provider on the night shift, with a full team of physicians and APPs on the day shift.
  • Support : On-site laboratory, X-ray, and comprehensive hospital services available 24 / 7.

  • Hospital credentialing is required and typically takes 8-12 weeks.
