Job description

Research Lab Manager

The Borowsky Laboratory and the Center for Genomic Pathology (CGP) Laboratory utilize basic and advanced techniques in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, experimental pathology including creation and phenotyping of genetically engineered mice, histology, immunohistochemistry and spatial -omics, tissue processing and biospecimen science, database design and maintenance including digital pathology images. The Laboratory Research Manager is responsible for management of the lab including training and supervision of laboratory personnel to include both technical (SRA) and academic (GS, JS, etc.) tracks. They will oversee laboratory supplies and reagents, equipment performance and maintenance, quality assurance programs, and training records. They will also oversee management of the CGP laboratory, a recharge core laboratory, including rate review submissions, user communications, billing / invoicing / accounting in coordination with the department business office, and future-planning and growth management.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $98,300 - $210,300 (Annual Rate).

The Department of Pathology at UCSF aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. The Department provides diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of subspecialties with highly trained subspecialists who are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise. The Department's research programs are diverse and interface with a wealth of basic and translational research programs that are a hallmark of UCSF. Our educational programs include a research-intensive academic residency program and fellowships in cytopathology, dermatopathology, gastrointestinal and liver pathology, gynecologic pathology, neuropathology and surgical pathology. The Department has locations throughout the city including Parnassus, Mission Bay, Mount Zion, the SF VA Medical Center and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, with over 70 faculty, 40 trainees, and a large number of research and administrative staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Post-graduate training in medical / biologic sciences.
  • Experience in laboratory management, including core laboratory recharge rates and user interactions.
  • Experience in hiring, training, and supervising research associates.
  • Experience in training / education of graduate and undergraduate students, fellows and specialists.
  • High level technical expertise in tissue antibody methods, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and spatial nucleic adic (DNA FISH; RNA transcript hybridization / sequencing).
  • Computing software proficiency, including experience working with whole slide imaging and databases such as Leica Spectrum ESlide Manager.
  • Solid leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities, scheduling instructional space, and ensuring completion of multiple projects.
  • Academic knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or instructional / experimental design). Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
  • Strong abilities to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.
  • Advanced knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical or biological disposal guidelines.
  • Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Leadership skills in employee supervision and HR administration to effectively lead and motivate others. Conflict resolution skills to resolve personnel issues and counsel assigned staff to develop cooperative working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a complex, challenging environment. Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility, anticipates and effectively handles change.
  • Ability to organize division operations in an efficient and effective manner through improving processes, procedures, and systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates.
  • Proven analytical abilities and problem solving skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify options for resolution. Demonstrates sound judgement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.
