Job description

Job Summary

Manager, LARC supervises the daily operations of a single animal clinic or research facility or a group of small facilities, ensuring that animals receive proper husbandry and care and that the facility is in compliance with regulations and guidelines set by the department, the campus and governmental agencies. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly

Please note : The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science or related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Five (5) or more years of supervisory / management experience in an animal husbandry program of similar nature and must include non-human primates or related work experience.
  • Solid knowledge of animal care and safety and regulatory environments
  • Solid knowledge of facility management
  • Solid skills in animal husbandry, record-keeping and inventory control
  • Solid skills in leadership, interpersonal communication, motivation of staff and team-building
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Computer competency
  • Solid ability to identify behavioral or health issues with animal(s) under care and report to veterinarian or supervisor any changes or unusual behavior or physical issues that need attention
  • Knowledge of EH&S, USDA, AAALAC, NIH, FDA-GLP, state, local and UCSF requirements in housing and care of animals in teaching and biomedical research to ensure the highest standard for animal welfare
  • Skilled in all aspects of animal care, large and small, and an excellent working knowledge of all LARC areas and the times needed to complete the tasks in these areas
  • Experience with nonhuman primates is required
  • Ability to keep concise, accurate, and neat records for federal, state, EH&S, USDA, FDA or other entities
  • Knowledge of latest equipment, automation techniques, computerization systems used in animal husbandry operations
  • Knowledge of animal behavior, restraint and handling to ensure animals and those working with them are not injureds
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexibility to rotate as needed to all vivarium and other job-related functions and to work with different supervisors equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid CA driver's license required OR Valid Class A driver's license
  • AALAS LATG certification
  • CMAR certification is highly desirable (CMAR=Certified Manager of Animal Resources)

    Department Description

    The Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC) supports the research programs of the faculty by providing all services associated with the care and use of more than 150,000 laboratory animals, consisting of at least fourteen different species housed in several animal facilities throughout the city of San Francisco. Services include the daily care of laboratory animals in accordance with protocols approved by the UCSF Institutional Animal Care and use Committee (IACUC); the design and implementation of animal disease prevention programs; training of research personnel involved in the use of animals; assuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations; and assisting investigators with animal related procedures. The Animal Resources Supervisor has overall responsibility for these services for the animal husbandry unit.

    LARC is a recharge department providing veterinary care and housing for all animals used in biomedical research and teaching. LARC provides veterinary medical care and husbandry services, assures compliance with laws and regulations concerning the use of animals in research, and veterinary medical advice to UCSF researchers. The Animal Resources Manager supports these activities by developing and implementing the highest standard of animal care through supervision of staff, coordination with researchers to ensure and compliance with all regulations pertaining to animal welfare.
