Position description

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music invites applications for a part-time Lecturer in Music Industry for the Winter quarter of the 2025-26 academic year. The position will staff a course in Sustainability in the Music Industry. The course will explore core business principles around greening merchandise, touring logistics, and large-scale musical events, while providing education and resources on sustainable practices in production, touring, festivals, and investment to help reduce the industry's environmental impact. Salary will be commensurate with applicant's qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities will include individual student teaching supervision and assigned undergraduate courses in the School of Music.

Applicants should have an established regional, national, and / or international reputation as a music industry sustainability professional; expertise in environmental and sustainability issues including, but not limited to : ecosystem degradation and loss, biodiversity loss, human population dynamics, renewable and non-renewable energy and resource use, waste disposal; expertise in working with record labels, festivals, artists, and touring around sustainability.

Applications should include a letter stating interest in the position, summarizing relevant experience, and providing a brief philosophy of teaching, a comprehensive resume, and names and contact information for at least three professional references. The application deadline is November 30, 2025, for Winter. The anticipated appointment date of January 1, 2026, for Winter quarter.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or a minimum of one professional certification in a related field
  • Experience as a music industry professional and / or educator
  • Ability to teach the development and implementation of corporate sustainability strategy, plans, and initiatives within the music industry
  • Ability to help students identify strategic opportunities focused on climate change and decarbonization within the music industry, along with decision making and civic action
  • An understanding of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) reporting and the data around it
  • Applicants should have an established regional, national, and / or international reputation as a music industry sustainability professional

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience and expertise in the development of music industry curriculum
  • University teaching experience
  • A graduate degree in Musicology or related field
