About The Department : The Probation Department conducts pre-sentence investigations, prepares pre-sentence reports, and makes placement recommendations for juveniles and adults accused of felonies. Following sentencing, the department monitors all individuals given terms of probation. The major divisions and "core" functions of the department are adult and juvenile intake, and adult and juvenile supervision.

The Shasta County Juvenile Rehabilitation Facility (JRF) is a 24-hour secure detention facility administered by the Probation Department. The JRF is responsible for the care, custody, and control of youth and transitional aged youth up to twenty-five years of age. Our mission is accomplished by ensuring staff serve as role models and project an appearance, attitude, and behavior which creates an atmosphere conducive to positive change, and by working closely with our community partners to deliver research-driven programs targeting the individual needs of our population.

Examples Of Essential Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

Gathers, tabulates, and analyzes data. May conduct background investigations of potential sworn and non-sworn employees; investigates complaints against employees (Internal Affairs investigations); and may independently conduct or assist with diverse administrative and civil investigations. Conducts in-person interviews, performs record searches through various resources such as the Department of Justice, educational and financial institutions, courts, and with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Duties are dependent upon the specific assignment and area of expertise. Performs work authorized under their particular / specific certification.

Examines and interprets documents and statements according to the provisions of laws, rules, and regulations. Results of the investigation will be completed in written format and submitted for review and evaluation.

Qualifications

It is the responsibility of applicants to identify in their application materials how they meet the minimum qualifications listed below. Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following :

Knowledge of : Possession and application of knowledge and abilities associated with the duty assignment; investigative principles and practices; law enforcement record systems and accessing of State and Federal rules and regulations, reports pertaining to the confidentiality of criminal record information and driver license information; general organizational and operating procedures of enforcement agencies.

Ability to : Gather and analyze data; identify areas of concern; reason logically; exercise sound judgment; perform and document findings; read and interpret procedures and State and Federal regulations; work in a Microsoft Windows-based environment; work effectively with the internet; follow both written and verbal directions; communicate effectively (written and verbal); work independently; maintain professional ethics; and provide professional services.

Minimum qualifications : A bachelor's degree in a related field AND one (1) year of experience conducting investigations in a law enforcement agency and / or military, with the primary responsibility of the position being to conduct investigations.

Direct law enforcement experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Special requirements : Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license at the time of application and have an acceptable driving record according to the County driving policy.

If assigned to conduct background investigations, incumbents will have two (2) months from the date of appointment to this class to obtain a valid POST-certified background investigation certification. Failure to obtain certification as outlined will result in the incumbent becoming disqualified for further employment as an Investigative Services Analyst.
