Job Description and Duties
Under the general direction of the Maintenance Manager I, the Landscape Specialist coordinates the District's vegetation management activities.
This position requires possession of a valid Agricultural Pest Control Advisors License issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulations (DPR) in the following categories : (A) control of insects, mites, and other invertebrates;
D) control of vertebrate pests; (E) control of weeds; (G) regulation of plant growth. Possession of a valid Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) issued by the DPR for the categories of Landscape Maintenance and Right of Way is an additional desirable qualification.
- Develops the Districts Pesticide Program; writes all pesticide recommendations, advises management and field staff on implementation of the program.
- Develops the Districts Vegetation Control Program including chemical and mechanical / mowing controls, advises management and field staff on implementation of the program.
Administers the Districts California Conservation Corps (CCC) Reimbursement Contract with field staff and CCC staff.
- Provides broad technical and operational assistance regarding landscape and tree maintenance issues.
- Investigates public complaints and comments regarding landscaping and trees and prepares recommendations and replies.
- Develops and conducts training programs for landscape, tree, and pesticide activities.
- Advises the District Encroachment Permit Office regarding landscape encroachment permits, visibility improvement permits, and permits involving other landscape issues.
- Provides technical information and recommendations regarding mowing, brush, and invasive exotic species control issues.
- Advises the Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator regarding landscape issues relating to the Adopt-A-Highway Program.

Working Conditions
Position is located in Eureka, Humboldt County
This is a Limited Term position which may be extended to 24 months or become permanent.
Incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting while at his / her base of operation. Incumbent will also be required to travel and work outdoors where exposure to noise, traffic, uneven terrain, precipitation, and extremes of weather will occur.
New toState candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification orminimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements
Must possess a valid Agricultural Pest Control Advisor License issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulations (DPR) covering the following categories : control of insects, mites and other invertebrates;
control of vertebrate pests; control of weeds; regulation of plant growth.
- Must be registered with the county agricultural commissioner. (Possession of the license and registration with the county agricultural commissioner are not required to compete in the examination, but they must be obtained prior to appointment.)
- Must possess a valid / unrestricted Class C Driver’s License.
Caltrans Landscape Specialist
Either I
Two years of experience in the California State Department of Transportation performing maintenance or construction duties in a maintenance function in a class comparable to Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor with responsibility for at least one landscape maintenance crew.
Or II
Four years of broad experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance, tree maintenance or chemical vegetation control work, two years of which shall have been as a supervisor responsible for planning and directing the work of three or more supervised crews.
