PURPOSE
The Senior Network Engineer will support IT infrastructure availability, performance, and stability to support SMC’s strategic goals.
Responsibilities include configuration and implementation of infrastructure services, including but not limited to data center network, campus networking, WAN connectivity, LANs, WLANs, and required operational security.
The Senior Network Engineer will be a member of a team of system administrators and engineers to provide support to the business.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Translate business requirements into efficient and effective technical solutions in the Network Environment
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior network engineers and other IT staff members in technical matters.
- Provide support for current and future enterprise systems
- Serve as a point of escalation for the Network Environment
- Follow SMC IT security policies, procedures, best practices, and established standards
- Lead in the optimization of IT Infrastructure implementations, forecasting, and maintenance
- Provide management with ways to improve administration, monitoring, reporting, and standard operating procedures
- Implement and maintain network hardware based on the IT initiatives and required upgrade projects within the organization
- Install and test wired and wireless network infrastructure
- Troubleshoot network systems, including any reported routing or switching problems, and recommend improvements
- Implement and maintain router / switch configurations and upgrades within the enterprise
- Provide network-monitoring services utilizing various network management tools
- Adhere to SMC’s IT change control (enablement) process
- Develop documentation and diagrams for all network projects that will be used for disaster recovery readiness on an ongoing basis
- Update current infrastructure equipment to current IOS levels and required Enterprise functionalities
- Provide support for overall network planning and related projects to include the utilization of technology for cost savings or enhanced productivity for SMC
- Perform router and switch upgrades within the enterprise
- Responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the information in DNS, DHCP, and IPAM databases
- Maintain current level of technical knowledge / certification on enterprise routing and switching technologies
- Work with customers to assist with network capacity and high availability requirements
- Work with customers and vendors to minimize and plan downtime
- All other duties as assigned

- Carry a company-provided phone & participate in on-call rotation

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Associate degree in Computer Science / Information Technology or relevant work experience
- 5+ years of relevant experience working in a large Enterprise Network environment, including a multiprotocol network, problem resolutions, extensive knowledge of the OSI model, and familiarity with industry-standard hardware, network management services, including proactive monitoring and performance reporting
- Basic understanding of ITSM Principles or ITIL4 Foundations certification
- Must have proficient knowledge of operating systems, network systems, and IT architecture
- Experience with various network monitoring tools and methodologies
- A core understanding of networking technologies and solutions including, but not limited to : MPLS, virtual route forwarding, virtual device contexts, policy-based routing, ether-channel, QoS, traffic-shaping, load balancing, VPN tunnels, WAN Optimization, firewalls, subnetting, VLANs, STP, Spine and Leaf architecture, packet captures, etc.
- Working knowledge of structured cabling systems, network facilities, electrical requirements, UPS, etc.
- Experience Active Directory Group Policy, Windows Administration
- Industry certifications with Arista and VMware network virtualization are preferred.
- Experience with VMware, vSphere environments
- WAN / LAN concepts and technologies
- DNS, IPAM, NTP administration
- Knowledge of firewall concepts and technologies
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
