Responsibilities
Registered Nursing First Assistant
The Registered Nursing First Assistant may assist the surgeon by performing technical functions during surgery, including intra-operative retraction, homeostasis, tissue manipulation, and wound closure.
The function of the Registered Nurse (RNFA) is to provide direct patient care as part of the perioperative role, by acting as first assistant to the surgeon during operative procedures.
- The RNFA will perform first assisting under the direct supervision of the primary surgeon; assist with the positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient or perform these independently, if so directed by the surgeon;
- ability to provide retracting, homeostasis, knot tying, and closure of layers; assist the surgeon at the completion of the procedure by affixing and stabilizing all drains, cleaning the wound and applying dressing;
assist with applying casts or plaster splints, and in transferring the patient from the operating table and accompany the patient to the PACU.
Qualifications
Minimum two (2) years / experience as both scrub and circulating nurse
Completion of an accredited Registered Nursing program
Either successful completion of a RNFA course jointly approved by the Chief of Surgery and the Director of Surgical Services or certification as a Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) by the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN)
Valid and current California RN license
Current BLS Certification
Current ACLS Certification
CNOR preferred
