Engineering Inspector

The purpose of this classification is to inspect construction of streets, storm and sanitary sewer lines, forced mains, lift stations, and pump stations to ensure compliance with standards and specifications. Employees in this position serve as liaison between city engineers and contractors performing work within the City of Albany. Reads and interprets plans and specifications; ensures compliance with standards and specifications.

Inspects construction of streets, sewers, fencing around holding ponds, curb and gutter installations, concrete placement of driveways, tree ordinance measures, and related conditions / structures.

Inspects work in progress; checks grade and alignment of pipelines and structures to ensure tolerances are maintained during construction; inspects pre-cast manholes and catch basins.

Advises foreman and crew leaders of standards to city specifications; notifies contractors of stop work orders as needed.

Prepares daily reports, non-compliance reports, and prepares / maintains field reports and daily log books.

Inspects site prior to construction for soil erosion and sedimentation control measures.

Inspects and inventories materials to be used in construction projects to ensure compliance to specifications.

Reviews pay requests for work performed on city funded jobs.

Assists in performing final inspections.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by Vocational / Technical training in reading blueprints preferred; additionally, two (2) years previous experience and / or training involving construction, pipe laying, and interpreting blueprints; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.

Mathematical Aptitude : Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, and ratios; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.

Functional Reasoning : Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning : Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.

Physical Ability : Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and / or pulling of heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100 pounds or over).

Sensory Requirements : Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
