HIRING RANGE : $45,742 - $52,604 annually; $21.99 - $25.29 hourly

This posting is for a Telecommunicator role, the schedules can vary based on the need of the vacancy that is being filled.
The schedules that may be assigned are as followed :
Day Shift - 5 : 30am to 5 : 30pm
Mid Shift - 12pm to 12am ($0.75 shift differential)
Night Shift - 5 : 30pm to 5 : 30am ($1.50 shift differential)
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
- Operates telecommunication equipment in the receipt and transmission of police, fire, and other calls
- Performs related duties as required
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Telecommunicators perform responsible technical work in monitoring multi-channel telecommunications equipment to dispatch police, fire, first responders, or other personnel and equipment in response to emergency and non-emergency calls on an assigned shiftEmployees in this class receive complaints and other forms of communications from the general public and where appropriate, contact the units to be dispatched, giving the type and location of the emergency and other pertinent informationWork involves the intensive use of computer systems and related interfacesWork is performed under the supervision of a telecommunications shift supervisorESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

Receives incoming calls on multi-band, multi-channel telecommunications equipmentClassifies as to nature and type of emergency or callObtains precise and detailed information usually from distressed individuals to ensure an appropriate course of actionDispatches appropriate public safety personnel and equipmentResponds to requests from the general public for information concerning full range of available public services or routes calls to appropriate department, division or personRecords demographic and other identifying data for each call received according to the and nature of emergency or non-emergencyOperates computer terminals for DCI (Division of Criminal Information) and departmental computer systemEnters and extracts data needed for investigative purposes by police or others authorized to receive such dataReceives and dispatches E911 calls, operates E911 equipment, including systems for telecommunication with the deafOperates computer terminal for Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)Decides if incoming calls should be referred to other local jurisdictions or if other state or local law enforcement, medical or fire personnel should be requestedReceives and dispatches police and fire calls for the City of KannapolisMonitors CCTVPerforms related duties and assignments as directed by the departmentTypical Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of internal procedures for documenting and responding to all requests for assistanceThorough knowledge of the geographical and topographical features of the City of Kannapolis and surrounding areaThorough knowledge of the City of Kannapolis infrastructure to include transportation routes, major buildings and residential areasGeneral knowledge of telecommunications equipment used in law enforcement or public safety environmentsGeneral knowledge of public safety policies and procedures for responding to emergenciesAbility to operate technical, computerized equipmentAbility to communicate precisely with a high degree of accuracy and clarityAbility to deal with the public courteously and professionally under stressful conditionsAbility to exercise good judgment and emotional maturity under stressful conditionsAbility to recognize potentially dangerous situations based on verbal descriptionsAbility to work longer hours on rotating or permanent shifts, with occasional overtime as required to ensure the continuity of emergency communicationsAbility to maintain confidentially of sensitive informationACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school and some experience in radio dispatching or public safety telecommunications work requiring computer skills and voice communication is preferred or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilitiesOther Necessary Requirements
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be 18 years or older at the time of employmentMust possess or be able to obtain by the time of hire, a valid North Carolina driver's licenseMust be a US citizen and able to read, write, and speak the English languageMust be able to acquire and maintain a valid certification from the NC Division of Criminal Information as a DCI Terminal Operator in all required modulesJOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS
