Position Summary :

Midnight Sun is seeking a Program Support Coordinator in support of a federal contract with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in at Research Triangle Park in Durham, North Carolina. The Animal Husbandry Support contract provides mission-critical care, maintenance, and technical services for a 72,000+ square foot laboratory facility seven days per week, including weekends and holidays. The Midnight Sun team supports the care and maintenance of the animals, sanitation of equipment, technical training, and the general maintenance of the facilities in such a manner as to maintain the highest level of Accreditation from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC). Animal studies primarily consist of rats and mice, but may also include rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, frogs, and fish.

The Program Support Coordinator provides essential administrative and programmatic support to the Comparative Medicine Branch (CMB), ensuring animal welfare through effective communication, coordination, and compliance across multiple teams and stakeholders. This position reports directly to the Project Manager, and oversees the Experimental Study Process (ESS), coordinates animal housing and technical support, reviews approved Animal Study Proposals for compliance, and provides IACUC support for animal procurement and delivery activities through extensive use of eSirius.

The ideal candidate will have great communication, computer, and technical skills, and work well both independently and with a team. Candidates must be adaptable and able to act in a positive, professional, and client-oriented manner.

Duties / Responsibilities :

  • Oversee the Experimental Study Sheet (ESS) process.
  • Coordinate animal study support for ESS across all parties involved (researchers, supervisors and facility management, animal care and technical support staff, and veterinary staff).
  • Receive ESS from NIEHS research personnel, compare proposed study activities to Animal Study Proposals to ensure compliance, and communicate with animal facility management personnel to facilitate animal housing and technical support.
  • Works with and can navigate the eSirius census and protocol management program across all contract-supported areas.
  • Provide IACUC support, assisting with animal procurement and delivery activities, and facilitating the animal transfer and transport process, ensuring animals are transferred from breeding to experimental protocols, transported to study locations, and facilitating communication across all involved parties.
  • Review and approve animal orders, with hazardous agents noted, and determine if principal investigator has an active safety protocol for the designated agents(s) (active ASP, numbers available, appropriate species / strain).
  • Oversee weekly animal census and monthly manual animal inventory and update inventory records and the assigned facility space data base monthly.
  • Facilitates the ordering of animal facility supplies, working with internal NIEHS warehouse personnel as well as with external vendors. Help with the development and application of proper nomenclature to identify unique genetically modified animal strain names.
  • Perform literature searches for strain information including background and specific allele modifications. Must use a working knowledge of animal science and be available to discuss proposed models with investigative research staff.
  • Prepare and submit activity summaries, animal census updates, and protocol status reports to COR and internal leadership as needed and requested.

Minimum Requirements :

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of experience in an animal facility.
  • Experience providing and coordinating support across multiple teams preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of IACUC protocol review and other industry-specific regulations and protocols.
  • Familiarity with the requirements for AAALAC accreditation and the NRC Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the Guide).
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in order to provide coverage while meeting deadlines for contract deliverables and study timelines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Strong ability to provide constructive, solutions-focused feedback to address company-client discrepancies professionally and in a positive manner.
  • High proficiency in eSirius or a comparable electronic facility management system.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Skills (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Certifications, Licenses, and Other

  • Laboratory Animal Technician (LATG) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) required.
  • Must be able to obtain / maintain site access.
  • Work Environment :

    Performance of the required job duties will be in large research facility where employees may subject to adverse variables of environmental conditions, both inside and outside. Work areas may often be hot, humid, and / or noisy due to operation of cage washing machines and autoclaves.

    Employees are potentially exposed to minor injuries such as cuts, bites, scrapes, pulled muscles, burns and unpleasant odors, and the possibility of exposure to hazardous materials including radioisotopes. Employees are exposed to animals and animal urine, feces, and dander that can act as allergens or as potential sources of zoonotic disease.

    Animal care personnel are required to wear a washable, cotton / polyester two-piece uniform of scrub pants and a long sleeve, snap-front shirt (a one-piece cotton coverall may be substituted), safety shoes, disposable shoe cover, head cover, surgical mask), and gloves when working in the animal rooms. Protective clothing is required to be worn by ALL personnel entering an animal room from the return corridors.

    Physical Demands :

    Essential duties of this position require the ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear. Vision requirements include near, far, and peripheral vision, as well as the ability to perceive color, depth, and adjust focus.

    Additional duties necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this job :

  • Ability to frequently use hands and fingers to use a computer, equipment, and handle supplies.
  • Ability to occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, squat, or reach.
