ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

UC San Diego is searching for a part-time Research Equipment Technician 4 to support the research, development, production, and deployment of oceanographic instrumentation for a 10-month temporary assignment.

Duration : This role is anticipated to last 10 months

Compensation : $31.57 per hour. Eligible for paid holidays and vacation / sick leave. Full-medical insurance also available

Work Schedule : Part-Time, Two Shift Options are available; 20 hours total per week. Either five 4 hour shifts OR 2 eight hour shifts and one 4 hour shift

Location : 100% on-site on campus in La Jolla with some at-sea operations required

DESCRIPTION

This position will support the research, development, production and deployment of oceanographic instrumentation.

Your primary responsibilities will include :

Instrument Refurbishment : Collaborate with technical staff to refurbish instruments from various manufacturers, including acoustic, chemical, and optical sensors, pumps, mooring release systems, inductive / satellite / acoustic modems, and more

Controller Design and Fabrication : Assist in designing, building, and refurbishing oceanographic controllers developed by our team.

This involves tasks such as PCB design, internal wiring, battery replacement, and bench testing

Sensor Deployment : Prepare sensors for deployment at sea by cleaning fouled components, replacing batteries and O-rings, and reprogramming for test or real missions

At-Sea Operations : Participate in at-sea operations, which can vary in duration from 1 day (3-4 times per year) to 3 weeks (once every 2 years)

QUALIFICATIONS

Associate degree related to electronics or similar

Knowledge of wiring, crimping, soldering and other electronics related tasks

Knowledge on reading and interpreting electronics schematics and wiring diagrams

Knowledge on PCB design based on a schematics created by someone else

Knowledge of computers, printers and email communication

Basic knowledge of hand tools

Basic knowledge of simple hardware components (bolts, screws, washers, nuts, etc)

Ability to interact and communicate with a variety of diverse individuals, including scientists, engineers, vendors, technicians, laboratories and other support personnel.

Capable of lifting and carrying up to 75lbs

Valid Drivers License

Capable of driving a 5000lbs rated forklift (desirable but not required)

Willingness to participate in our at-sea operations for up to 1.5 month per year

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

This is for a Part-Time employment at 50%, with possibilities of longer hours when needed (preparation for a scientific cruise, last minute issues with instruments, etc.).

This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18.

It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy, and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $65,918 - $79,448 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $31.57 - $38.05

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
