Underwriter Position

Responsibilities :
As an Underwriter, you will seek profitable growth of the company's portfolio of specialty accident business by analyzing and selecting risks based on qualified underwriting criteria that adhere to the company's established underwriting guidelines. The Underwriter will work closely with more seasoned underwriting staff to develop more advanced underwriting acumen over time. You'll also gain a more thorough understanding of the Company's compliance, actuarial, claims and distribution departments, all of which will advance your experience and judgement level as an Underwriter.
This role will report to the AVP, Underwriting - Specialty Accident. We'll trust you to manage your workload with a sense of urgency around quote deadlines and production targets. This role will require proactive collaboration with underwriting management to review more complex cases requiring a higher degree of underwriting authority.

We'll Count On You To :
Write and retain profitable accident cases adhering to the company's guidelines and within assigned letter of authority.Be accountable for the Special Risk underwriting results for a region, including account retention, underwriting margin and book profitability targetsExhibit and maintain high standards for underwriting including risk selection, pricing performance, and account documentation.Ensure compliance with underwriting best practices and guidelines, ensuring they are implemented appropriately and consistently across the book of businessPartner with Director of Business Development to :Establish and meet sales and underwriting goalsManage workflow between underwriting and distribution to meet service level expectations, market expectations and brand promiseDeliver best-in-market service to our distribution partners without sacrificing profitabilityProvide insight into continued development of automated and integrated underwriting administrative platformPartner with operations / systems to develop and implement process and service improvement plansDevelop knowledge of and comfort with the full suite of A&H products, able to represent them all in your marketplaceWork on special projects as assignedQualifications :
Minimum 2 5 years of experience as an underwriter, underwriting assistant or underwriting admin.An understanding of the needs of our customers, both insureds and their agents alike. You will be an excellent, pro-active advocate for Berkley A&H customers and are passionate about their brand experienceExceptional oral and written communication skills. Your communication style is flexible to the situation. You communicate clearly and with a purpose.Calm under pressure. You have excellent organizational skills, integrity, and great follow-through on tasks. You are comfortable challenging norms while working collaboratively with colleagues at all levels of the organization.A strong customer service bias. You are known for your super responsiveness. You can say no and preserve your relationships, but you want to get to yes.An analytical mind. You love to dive into the details of an account in order to craft pricing and coverage that meet underwriting guidelines, profitability models and customer needs.Proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products. The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full time regular employees which for this role include : Base Salary Range : $100,000 - $120,000 Eligible to participate in annual discretionary bonus. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
