Definition
Under direction, directs, coordinates, and supervises the activities and operations of the maintenance and care of City parks, grounds, medians, landscaping, and facilities; implements maintenance policies and procedures; outlines, assigns, and determines work projects; ensures safe work practices; performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Park Maintenance Supervisor is the supervisory level classification responsible for overseeing the Park Maintenance Division. The incumbent plans and schedules staff assignments and monitors work production. This class supervises the maintenance and care of City parks, grounds, medians, landscapes, and related facilities; plans and schedules staff assignments and monitors work production. The incumbent provides ongoing monitoring of service delivery and manages several maintenance contracts. This classification is distinguished from the Park Manager, which has overall responsibility for the administration and management of all park and tree maintenance operations.
Supervision Received / Exercised
Receives direction from the Park Manager. Exercises direct and indirect supervision over assigned staff.

Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions
Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and repetitive hand movement. Requires near and far vision for inspecting work and operating equipment. Must lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more. Outdoor work in all weather conditions; exposure to fumes, dust, and air contaminants; potential exposure to mechanical hazards. May require climbing ladders, using power and noise-producing tools, driving vehicles and heavy equipment, and working in heavy vehicle traffic. May respond to after-hours emergency calls and perform standby duties.

Qualifications
Education and / or Experience :
Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities for a Park Maintenance Supervisor. Typically, four years of increasingly responsible park maintenance experience, including two years in a lead or supervisory capacity, and the equivalent of a high school diploma, supplemented by specialized training in ornamental horticulture.
License / Certificate :
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class B California driver's license. Must maintain DL 51A health certification and possess California endorsements required to operate applicable City vehicles and / or equipment. Possession of or ability to obtain a Qualified Applicator Certificate issued by the State of California.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge of :
Practices, techniques, and methods of parks and facilities maintenance and repair; operation of specialized construction, landscaping, and maintenance tools and equipment; propagating, planting, cultivating, pruning, and care of flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees; soil preparation for planting; proper use of fertilizers and pesticides; irrigation systems, timers, and controls; turf types and management; project development and cost estimating; budget development and administration; supervision, training, and motivation; applicable laws, codes, and safety practices; scheduling work assignments; mathematics and record keeping; occupational hazards and safety practices.
Ability to :
Supervise and direct Park Maintenance Division operations; plan, organize, and direct work of staff; safely operate maintenance tools and equipment; estimate time and materials; coordinate and conduct staff training; manage construction and service contracts; respond to community issues; work independently and in a team; make sound decisions within guidelines; follow written and oral directions; observe safety principles; communicate clearly; establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Skill :
Safely and effectively operate a variety of maintenance equipment and tools; operate an office computer and related software.
