Summary / Objective : A shipyard industrial hygienist job focuses on protecting workers from occupational health hazards in a maritime environment. This role involves identifying, assessing, and controlling risks associated with chemicals, physical agents (like noise and heat), and ergonomic issues. They conduct workplace assessments, collect samples, develop control measures, and provide training to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

Duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Identify potential health hazards in the shipyard environment, including chemical exposures, physical agents like noise and vibration, and ergonomic factors.
  • Conduct independent worksite inspections for hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead and other substances in various shipyard settings.
  • Provide industrial hygiene expertise, surveys, and investigations to identify, evaluate, and control hazards affecting shipyard employees.
  • Conduct atmospheric testing for flammable, toxic, and oxygen-deficient or enriched atmospheres on confined spaces.
  • Develop and implement sampling plans for hazardous materials.
  • Analyze and interpret hazardous material sampling data.
  • Prepare and deliver reports on hazardous materials findings and recommendations.
  • Stay up to date on the latest hazardous materials regulations and bast practices.
  • Maintain proficiency in asbestos fiber counting and bulk analysis.

Education / Experience Required :

  • Demonstrated expertise within applicable trade with 1 to 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Understand the Naval Ship Repair requirements and working environment.
  • Experience utilizing industrial hygiene concepts and practices in ship repair and related industrial activities.
  • Experience recognizing and evaluating health hazards and implementing health hazard controls
  • Experience administering occupational safety and health programs and performing industrial hygiene duties such as lead and asbestos sampling.
  • Proficiency in standard office computer software.
  • Must be able to work in the US.
  • Must have a valid California driver's license.
  • Preferred : N / A

    Position Type / Expected Hours of Work : This is a full-time position requires 40+ hours of work per week. M-F 0600 - 1430 (or as otherwise assigned by General Manager) with pre-scheduled overtime as needed.

    Work Environment : This job operates in an office environment and shipyard work environment.

    Travel : This position may require ability to travel.

    Physical Demands : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be available to work at heights, confined spaces and have the ability to climb staircases and ladders of varying sizes.

    May involve carrying objects that weigh up to 50 lbs., frequent stooping, bending, crawling, reaching, and walking.
