CLARKE SCHOOL OF LAW (UDC LAW) seeks to hire a tenure‑track faculty member to join our dynamic and mission‑driven community in the 2026‑2027 academic year. Candidates may teach Property Law, Family Law, and Wills, Trusts, and Estates. A J.D. is required, with high scholarly distinction or promise and a commitment to teaching excellence. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Teach assigned School of Law courses in the JD program. Maintain proficiency in the use of software and technology in the classroom. Research, write, and publish scholarly output in academic or professional journals, books, media outlets, and/or electronic media consistent with the direction of the academic program. Keep abreast of developments in the relevant instructional areas by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences. Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, papers, and exams using rubrics and other student‑centered approaches. Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records. Advise and mentor students on academic and career issues. Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students. Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and scholarship issues. Participate in writing grant proposals, as appropriate, to procure external research funding. Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, program matters, and academic issues. Participate in student recruitment and placement activities. Minimum Job Requirements Assistant Professor of Law Earned Juris Doctor degree and membership in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or another state. Potential for teaching excellence and scholarly growth. Demonstrated professional competence in the relevant field and potential for professional growth. An initial appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor of Law shall be without tenure and for a period of not more than three years. Associate Professor of Law Earned Juris Doctor degree and membership in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or another state. Demonstrated teaching excellence and a record of scholarship. Demonstrated professional competence in the relevant field, demonstrated professional attainment, and potential for continued professional growth. At least three years of full‑time teaching experience at an accredited law school. The Dean may recognize and allow substitution of appropriate professional experience and achievement if the candidate has less teaching experience than required, provided that the candidate demonstrates potential for effective teaching. The resident must provide at least eight proofs of bona fide District residency on or before effective appointment and maintain such residency for seven consecutive years. Failure to maintain the residency for the 7‑year period will result in forfeiture of employment. Drug‑Free Workplace: The selected individual will be required to notify the immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five days after a criminal drug conviction occurring in the workplace.
