Overview

The Certified Teacher-Preschool serves as a member of the Montclair Y staff team and maintains the qualifications for teacher status as listed in the New Jersey Department of Education policy and Montclair Y's standards. Under the direction of the Director and / or Assistant Director and in harmony with the mission and goals of Montclair Y, the Certified Teacher-Preschool is responsible for instructional, clerical and / or classroom tasks, providing a safe, fun, and positive environment for participants. The Certified Teacher leads in the education, health, welfare, and safety of the members enrolled in their classroom and the center. The position requires commitment to the YMCA's four Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Greet each child and parent upon arrival.
• Visually scan each child upon arrival for illness, disease, or physical impairment and note findings in daily report.
• Demonstrate warmth toward children; use a pleasant and calm speaking voice.
• Comfort children when needed.
• Plan and deliver instructional lessons aligned with the Montclair School District's instructional objectives.
• Supervise children during outdoor play and indoor activities; accompany to playground and supervise fire drills.
• Set up cots / mats in classroom.
• Reinforce skills using puppets, flannel boards, and manipulatives on a one-to-one or small group basis.
• Select appropriate songs and stories; read and sing with class daily.
• Supervise fine and gross motor activities indoors and outdoors; plan free play and afternoon activities.
• Use positive reinforcement and assist children with personal hygiene.
• Prepare materials for lessons; prepare learning centers and bulletin boards.
• Serve snacks and meals; maintain the classroom and record children's progress.
• Communicate with parents and directors about issues; attend required meetings and maintain classroom records.
• Mentor and supervise assistant teachers; adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
• Attend Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants; report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and follow mandated reporting procedures.
• Ensure proper sign-in / sign-out of members, volunteers, and vendors; restrict access to authorized personnel only.
• Support professional growth by attending workshops and reading; perform other duties as requested by the Director.
• Adhere to Geyer Early Learning Center policies; maintain loyalty to the Y and uphold confidentiality of families served; model professional behavior.
• Maintain a safe and healthy environment; participate in risk / facility management and quality assurance activities as required.
• Attend mandatory training and staff meetings; stay current with trends in facilities and risk management.
