Position Summary

The English Language Learners (EL) Coordinator provides comprehensive program support, both directly and indirectly, to administration, teachers, and program support staff.

This support ensures the delivery of consistent and effective services to students and families within the district who speak languages other than English.

The Coordinator serves as an advocate for the needs of EL students at the district level, actively participating in department meetings and disseminating strategies to enhance English language development.

Additionally, they collaborate with school-based staff to develop and implement high-quality instructional and curricular programs tailored to support English Language learners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees the implementation of programs and services designed to support the academic and language development of EL students, including English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, bilingual education programs, and language proficiency assessments;
  • follows EL program requirements as directed by the state;
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and district regulations and policies governing the education of EL students, including language proficiency assessments, program evaluation, and reporting requirements
  • Serves as case manager, ensuring documentation pursuant to federal, state, and district regulations and policies governing the education of EL students is standardized, maintained, and accessible for program audits;
  • Advises school administration on Tier 1 scheduling, rostering, and staffing infrastructure needed to support the foundation of a successful EL Program
  • Fosters collaboration and communication among teachers, administrators, support staff, and community stakeholders to create a supportive and inclusive environment for EL students;
  • Ensures compliance with and trains staff on the district's Language Access Plan, monitoring implementation to verify use of language access tools (ex.

document translation, contracted interpreters) with integrity

  • Oversees identification of, screening, placement, and scheduling of ELL students upon registration
  • Develops EL Program service delivery models (Content Based Instruction, English as a Second Language Resource, and Newcomer Program) to ensure that students' EL Program services are meaningfully different and proportionate to their proficiency level, grade level, and educational background.;
  • Provides appropriate and adequate EL program services based on each EL student's individual needs, and to facilitate transition out of such services
  • Coordinates meetings and professional development opportunities for educators to enhance their ability to meet the diverse needs of EL students, including training on language acquisition strategies, cultural competency, and best practices in the education of English Learners;
  • Ensures that English Learners have meaningful access to all curricular & extracurricular programs, including the development and dissemination of EL Accommodation Forms
  • Brings EL expertise to the SBLC Team in decisions of ABC (Attendance, Behavior, Course Performance) Intervention, MTSS matriculation, pre-referral, and referral activities of English Learners
  • Works with District Test Coordinator to ensure seamless facilitation of annual English proficiency assessment (to include ordering of respective material) and to enter EL accommodations for state testing
  • Implements progress monitoring of language acquisition with fidelity by building assessment times into the school calendar and using results to inform decisions of a student's EL prescription of services
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data related to the academic progress and language proficiency of EL students to inform decision-making, assess the program's success, and substantiate program changes based on annual ELPT Progress Index results
  • Completes Reclassification forms as appropriate and standardizes monitoring of former-ELs
  • Attends required Title III meetings;
  • Serves as Lead EL Teacher and performs instructional duties as assigned
  • Supports EL Teaching staff in implementing instructional strategies through modeling and observation
  • Updates the EL teacher staff to reflect district and state policy changes;
  • Assists EL teachers in connecting with resources to support language instruction;
  • Advocates for the needs of EL students at the district and state levels, participating in meetings, committees, and policy discussions related to language education and equity;
  • Works intentionally to establish relationships with English Language learner families, proactively meets the needs of immigrant families, plans events with programming specific to EL families, ensure equitable participation at parent meetings, and frequent communications by other school staff
  • Performs other duties as required.

Educational Background

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • Valid Louisiana teaching certification with ESL endorsement required

Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Strong understanding of language acquisition principles and teaching methodologies;
  • Experience working with ELL students in an educational setting;
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multi-tasking skills;
  • Proficient in office software;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and outside agencies;
  • Ability to analyze data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions to improve program effectiveness
  • Ability to keep concise records and handle sensitive information with discretion;
  • Ability to work with a diversity of individuals and groups;
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities and maintain flexible working hours;
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred.

$45,400 - $72,110 a year

Salaries are determined by educational background and / or relevant years of experience.

Performance Evaluation

The employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods : via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument.

If the employee holds an Educational Leadership certification, he / she will be evaluated via COMPASS to ensure renewal of certification.
