Job description

Security Infrastructure Support Database Administrator Overview cFocus Software is seeking a Security Infrastructure Support Database Administrator to design, implement, and maintain secure and reliable database systems across hybrid (on-premises and cloud) environments supporting a federal agency.

The Database Administrator will manage database operations, ensure data integrity, and implement security controls aligned with federal compliance frameworks.

This position requires strong technical expertise in database management, cybersecurity best practices, and experience supporting mission-critical systems in hybrid environments.

This is a full-time position that may require on-site support at federal agency locations in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Some telework flexibility may be available depending on mission requirements.   Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or higher-level security clearance as required by the agency.

Responsibilities The Security Infrastructure Support Database Administrator shall perform duties that include, but are not limited to :

  • Design, configure, and maintain secure database environments in both on-premises and cloud infrastructures.
  • Administer, monitor, and optimize databases to ensure performance, reliability, and scalability across hybrid systems.
  • Implement and maintain database security controls in compliance with FISMA, NIST SP 800-53, and related federal cybersecurity frameworks.
  • Support database migrations, upgrades, and patching processes while ensuring minimal downtime and full data integrity.
  • Collaborate with cloud engineers to integrate and secure databases hosted in AWS, Azure, or O365 environments.
  • Perform database backups, restores, and disaster recovery testing to ensure business continuity and data protection.
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments and security audits for database environments to identify and remediate potential risks.
  • Develop and enforce policies, procedures, and documentation related to database management and access control.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex database performance issues, root causes, and availability concerns.
  • Ensure compliance with agency-specific security baselines and configuration management policies for database systems.
  • Participate in incident response, POA&M resolution, and continuous monitoring efforts related to database security operations.
  • Coordinate with third-party vendors and cross-functional IT teams to support and enhance database security and performance.
  • Provide technical documentation, risk assessments, and executive-level briefings related to database operations and compliance.
  • Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field (preferred). 5+ years of experience designing, installing, maintaining, and supporting databases for IT systems in hybrid (on-premises and cloud) environments. 2+ years of experience in cybersecurity or information security roles.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for explaining complex security concepts to technical and non-technical audiences, including executive-level reporting.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with cloud security concepts, services, and operations (AWS, Azure, O365), including migration and security hardening pertaining to databases.
  • Experience supporting, maintaining, and upgrading common database platforms in hybrid on-premises and cloud environments.
  • Hands-on experience with federal cybersecurity compliance frameworks (FISMA, NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP 800-92, OMB M-21-31, CDM).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities for identifying and addressing database security issues and root causes.
  • Experience working with third-party vendors and cross-functional teams to ensure coordinated database management and support.
  • Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting DHS or other federal agencies in secure database administration or cybersecurity roles.
  • Proficiency with major database technologies such as Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.
  • Experience automating database management tasks using scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, or Bash.
  • Knowledge of database encryption, auditing, and access control mechanisms in compliance with federal standards.
  • Experience managing database performance tuning, query optimization, and high availability configurations.
  • Ability to develop SOPs, metrics, and reports aligned with agency SLAs and KPIs.
