Job description

Elementary Principal Position

This job posting is for any elementary principal position in the district that may become available for the 2026-2027 school year. Schools may vary based on vacancies.

Job Title: Principal

Supervisor: Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent(s)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Goals:

  • To effectively and efficiently administer the school.
  • To plan, promote, implement, supervise, and evaluate effective instructional and related programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Three (3) years teaching experience.
  3. Valid Alabama certification in administration/supervision.
  4. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  5. Knowledge of curriculum development, effective classroom practices and staff development principles.
  6. Ability to demonstrate effective leadership skills in group settings.
  7. Ability to understand the unique needs, growth issues, and learning characteristics of students of the school/grade level(s) assigned.
  8. Knowledge of special education laws, policies, rules and procedures.
  9. Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  10. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, including, but not limited to, students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members.
  11. Knowledge and ability to use and facilitate the use of various forms of education technology.
  12. Ability to assist with instructional techniques.
  13. Ability to organize, delegate and supervise others effectively.
  14. Ability to evaluate and provide constructive feedback to faculty and staff as assigned.
  15. Ability to use group dynamics within the context of cultural diversity.
  16. Ability to collaboratively plan with faculty, staff, and system officials for school improvement and increased student achievement.
  17. Knowledge of educational trends, data analysis, and research.
  18. Knowledge of curriculum and principles of learning.
  19. Ability to use technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling and other job responsibilities as required.
  20. Knowledge of student behavior management.
  21. Physical mobility and visual acuity to visit schools and classrooms and to perform job requirements.
  22. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  23. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  2. Manages and administers the instructional program according to state and school system guidelines.
  3. Manages and administers the accreditation program and continuous improvement plan for the assigned school.
  4. Models appropriate and innovative use of technology for faculty, staff and students.
  5. Facilitates and monitors the integration of technology in the classroom.
  6. Manages and administers the testing program for the school.
  7. Approves school-sponsored activities and maintain a calendar of all school events.
  8. Provides for the articulation of the school's instructional program among school personnel.
  9. Manages the effective use of personnel.
  10. Assigns and supervises special tasks and assignments for all school personnel.
  11. Administers and develops instructional and non-instructional duty rosters.
  12. Coordinates school safety plans and facility inspections at the assigned school.
  13. Manages and supervises the school's financial resources, including the preparation and disbursement of the school budget and internal accounts.
  14. Establishes and manages attendance procedures at the assigned school.
  15. Maintains property inventory for school property in accordance with system financial procedure.
  16. Provides a quick response to any emergency involving students, staff or the school facility.
  17. Maintains high visibility within all areas of the facility.
  18. Supervises the orderly movement and safety of transportation services on school grounds.
  19. Implements disciplinary procedures and policies.
  20. Coordinates extracurricular programs at the assigned school.
  21. Supervises the guidance program.
  22. Manages and administers personnel development through training, inservice and other developmental activities.
  23. Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development.
  24. Models and encourages positive interpersonal communication skills for all non-instructional and instructional personnel.
  25. Develops and maintains positive school/community relations and acts as liaison between the school and community.
  26. Directs and develops the recruitment of business and/or civic partners to benefit the school and community.
  27. Communicates, through staff meetings and written material, information that will keep staff informed of policies, procedures and instructional program changes and updates.
  28. Participates in system-wide management meetings and other meetings and activities appropriate for professional development and effective school operations.
  29. Provides leadership in the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans.
  30. Establishes a vision and mission for the school in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  31. Uses appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to guide individuals and groups to task accomplishment.
  32. Adheres to federal, state, and local laws as well as the rules, regulations, and policies of the school system.
  33. When appropriate, solicits additional resources to support school programs through grant-writing, development programs, or fund-raising activities in accordance with school system financial guidelines.
  34. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
  35. Models and maintains high ethical standards.
  36. Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
  37. Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
  38. Keeps supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  39. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  40. Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member and among diverse cultural groups.
  41. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
  42. Prepares all required reports and maintains all appropriate records.
  43. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
  44. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  45. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment: As established by the Board and applicable State law.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
