The Evening Program Manager On Duty (MOD) is the on-site leader responsible for the successful operation of evening programs and activities at Western Camps. Under the direction of the Program Director, this position leads and supports instructors, monitors program safety and quality, coordinates evening schedules and staffing, and helps create engaging, memorable guest experiences.

The primary focus of this position is evening program leadership and operations. During MOD shifts, the Evening Program Manager also provides guest support and assists other departments as needed, particularly during multi-program operations, special events, high-volume periods, or unexpected operational situations.

This is an active, hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys working with people, leading teams, facilitating outdoor activities, solving problems, and creating exceptional guest experiences in a dynamic camp and outdoor education environment.

Essential Responsibilities

Evening Program Leadership

  • Lead and oversee evening programs and activities, ensuring they are safe, engaging, properly staffed, and on schedule.
  • Serve as the on-site evening leader and primary point of contact for instructors and program staff.
  • Monitor multiple programs and ensure smooth transitions, activity rotations, staffing coverage, and logistics.
  • Facilitate or assist with outdoor education and recreation activities such as archery, ropes course, canoeing, paintball, and other adventure- or science-based programs.
  • Support setup, breakdown, equipment organization, and logistics for evening programs and special events.
  • Provide instructional or operational coverage when needed.
  • Respond effectively to schedule changes, staffing challenges, weather-related changes, and other last-minute program needs.

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Provide direction, coaching, mentoring, and support to evening instructors and program staff.
  • Model excellent instruction, safety, leadership, and customer service practices.
  • Observe staff performance and provide constructive feedback to support professional growth and program quality.
  • Delegate tasks effectively while remaining visible and available to the evening team.
  • Assist with staff training, onboarding, instructional materials, lesson plans, and training videos.
  • Motivate staff and promote a positive, professional, and team-oriented work environment.

Guest Experience & MOD Support

  • Maintain a strong focus on guest safety, engagement, satisfaction, and service throughout evening operations.
  • Serve as a resource for guests, responding to questions, requests, concerns, and behavioral issues.
  • Provide guest supervision and support outside of the primary evening program area when needed.
  • Assist other departments during MOD shifts or multi-program operations as operational needs arise.
  • Help ensure guests feel welcomed, supported, and safe throughout their experience.
  • Promote the hospitality standards and mission of Western Camps, Inc.

Safety & Emergency Response

  • Ensure evening activities follow established safety standards, risk management procedures, operating policies, and activity protocols.
  • Monitor activities and identify potential safety, behavioral, staffing, or operational concerns.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, accidents, injuries, behavioral incidents, and other safety concerns.
  • Exercise sound judgment and remain calm and solution-focused in unexpected situations.
  • Document and promptly report incidents, accidents, injuries, maintenance concerns, and safety issues.
  • Communicate important updates, incidents, staffing concerns, and supply needs to the Program Director.

Communication & Operations

  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Program Director, Outdoor Education leadership, Recreation leadership, instructors, and other departments.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams while maintaining primary responsibility for evening programs.
  • Participate in daily cleaning, organization, equipment care, facility upkeep, and maintenance of program areas.
  • Identify opportunities to improve program quality, safety, efficiency, staff development, and guest satisfaction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director or Recreation Director.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in outdoor education, summer camp, youth development, recreation, hospitality, or customer service preferred.
  • Previous leadership, supervisory, program management, or staff coordination experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with outdoor recreation activities such as archery, canoeing, ropes course, paintball, or other adventure programs preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to learn all activities offered on property and applicable Outdoor Education (ODE) lesson plans.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to supervise, coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback to staff.
  • Strong customer service and guest relations skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred; ability to obtain certification as required.
  • Must demonstrate maturity, reliability, professionalism, initiative, and enthusiasm for guest engagement.

Schedule

This position requires flexibility based on business and program needs.

  • Evening, weekend, and holiday availability required.
