As a SUE Vac Truck Operator, you will operate hydrovac / vacuum excavation trucks for utility potholing, daylighting, and excavation while ensuring job site safety and accurate daily documentation. Responsibilities also include equipment inspections, basic maintenance, and cross-training in utility locating using EM locators, GPR, and utility maps.
What are the core responsibilities for the role?
- Operate hydrovac / vacuum excavation trucks for utility potholing, daylighting, and general excavation.
- Perform daily pre- and post-trip vehicle / equipment inspections and basic maintenance.
- Handle job site setup and safety : cones, signage, traffic control (if applicable), site cleanup, etc.
- Keep accurate daily records of job details : utility exposures, findings, locations, materials used, etc.
- Cross-train in utility locating and designating — including use of EM locators, GPR, and interpreting utility maps / plans.
- We offer on-the-job training and mentoring, especially for techs looking to grow into utility locating / designating roles.
- Support available for obtaining CDL licenses, endorsements, and safety certifications.
Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies :
Prefer candidates with 2+ years operating hydrovac or vacuum excavation equipment, ideally in support of SUE work (utility potholing, daylighting, etc.).CDL Class A or B with tanker endorsement preferred, but we are also open to :We're open to non-CDL candidates who have experience with utility potholing or vacuum excavation using non-CDL vac trucks —especially if they're working toward getting a CDL or are interested in obtaining one. While a CDL is preferred, we have a non-CDL vac truck available, so we'd consider strong candidates who don’t yet have their CDL license.
Experience with utility locating / designating is a plus but not required.Willing to cross-train in utility locating / designating as part of career growth.Detail-oriented and takes pride in accurate, high-quality work.Strong safety mindset — understands importance of pre- / post-trip inspections, equipment maintenance, and job site safety.Physically capable — able to work outdoors in varied conditions, lift 50+ lbs, and handle physically demanding tasks.Reliable and communicative — shows up consistently, communicates well with team, and willing to work variable hours when needed.Career-focused and interested in learning related services (utility locating, designating, etc.).Willing and able to work nights, weekends, and travel occasionally.Why would a candidate want this job?
