Position Summary
The Director of Staff Development (DSD) is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing education and training programs for all nursing personnel, while also overseeing master scheduling and daily staffing coordination for licensed nurses (RNs/LVNs) and Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs). This dual-focus role ensures that our facility remains both thoroughly educated and adequately staffed across all shifts.
Key Responsibilities
Staffing & Scheduling:
Manage and coordinate master schedules and daily shift assignments for licensed nurses (RNs, LVNs) and CNAs to ensure proper shift coverage and state-mandated staffing ratios.
Manage call-outs, shift trades, and open shifts in a timely manner, utilizing PRN staff and agency resources when necessary to minimize overtime and staffing gaps.
Monitor attendance, punctuality, and hours worked to support payroll processing.
Onboarding & Orientation: Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive orientation programs for all newly hired nursing staff.
In-Service Education: Design and conduct monthly and annual mandatory in-services (e.g., OSHA, infection control, resident rights, fall prevention, and clinical skills) to meet state and federal requirements.
Competency Assessments: Evaluate staff clinical competencies regularly and coordinate supplemental training to address identified performance gaps.
Compliance & Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, up-to-date educational records, training logs, and employee scheduling files in compliance with state Department of Health guidelines.
Qualifications & Requirements
Licensure: Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN/LPN) license in the state of [State].
Experience: Minimum of [2–3] years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year of experience in a long-term care / skilled nursing facility and prior experience in nurse scheduling or staff coordination.
DSD Certification: Completion of a state-approved Director of Staff Development / Nurse Educator course (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
Skills: Strong leadership, scheduling aptitude, public speaking, and communication skills; excellent organizational and crisis-management abilities.
Knowledge: Thorough understanding of state and federal regulations governing skilled nursing facilities and staffing ratios.
