Lead Industrial Maintenance Mechanic – Rubber Molding Systems
Location: Chicago, IL (Onsite)
Schedule: Day Shift, 4:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. | Full-Time, Direct Hire
A day in this role
At 3:55 a.m., you’re on the floor walking the line. A press is warming to spec, VFDs are humming, and a PLC alarm from last night’s run is waiting for your diagnosis. By sunrise, you’ve isolated a faulty sensor on a 480V circuit, adjusted proportional pump settings on a high-pressure hydraulic press, and coached a junior tech through proper LOTO for a boiler line check. Before lunch, you’ve scheduled a bearing change-out in the CMMS, rigged a platen realignment with precision, and briefed production on safe restart. This is what leading uptime looks like in rubber molding.
What you will do
- Troubleshoot, overhaul, and repair multi-stage high-pressure hydraulic molding presses, accumulators, cylinders, directional valves, and proportional pumps.
- Diagnose automated machinery I/O, variable frequency drives (VFDs), industrial sensors, relays, and PLC-controlled systems up to 480V.
- Read, interpret, and troubleshoot PLC ladder logic.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair steam boiler lines, electric heating platens, temperature controllers, hot oil heating units, and cooling water tower circuits.
- Lead major machinery rebuilds, including replacing large bearings, gearboxes, drive shafts, and automated transport mechanisms.
- Plan and execute heavy rigging to relocate or realign molding presses and auxiliary equipment.
- Execute, document, and optimize preventive and predictive maintenance programs using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Audit parts inventory and maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Lead emergency troubleshooting to minimize downtime during active production.
- Assign daily work orders, monitor progress, and mentor junior maintenance technicians.
- Follow LOTO, NFPA 70E, OSHA, and all company safety procedures at all times.
- Keep the shop floor organized, clean, and safe; perform additional duties as assigned.

- Ability to interpret hydraulic schematics, electrical wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and pneumatic layouts.
- Verified Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) training.
- Forklift, aerial lift, and overhead crane certifications preferred.
- Comfort with digital multimeters, insulation testers, hydraulic pressure gauges, precision micrometers, welding equipment, and heavy rigging tools.
