Description :

The Department of Sterile and Materials Processing is a state-of-the-art instrument processing and sterilizing facility.

The Sterile Processing Department assists in the decontamination, high-level disinfection, assembling, sterilization, and distribution of clean and sterile surgical instruments, trays, and pans.

These functions are performed using advanced decontamination, high-level disinfection, and sterilization equipment.

Instruments, trays, and pans are assembled, processed, and distributed to multiple operating room suites, units, and clinics.

These items are tracked using a bar code system.

Key Responsibilities :

Inspect, assemble, package, and sterilize surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts.

Select the method of packaging and sterilization, consulting with the processing manager as needed.

Examine surgical instrumentation for cleanliness and proper assembly and function.

Assemble instrument sets, ensuring the appropriate number and type of instruments per established protocols.

Handle instruments appropriately to ensure sterilization.

Complete count / supply sheets to document the contents of trays.

Follow established procedures to package and wrap trays and instruments to guarantee sterilization.

Operate steam sterilizers in accordance with established procedures.

Check time, pressure, and temperature gauges frequently to maintain proper levels.

Load and unload sterilizers and place items on shelves for distribution.

Perform simple maintenance of sterilizers, such as cleaning drain baskets.

Assure sterility is achieved by preparing cultures, reviewing test packs processed, interpreting results, and completing required documentation.

Check and adjust medical equipment according to specific procedures to ensure instruments and equipment operate according to specifications prior to issuing.

Send all equipment not meeting specifications to the appropriate area for repair.

Decontaminate surgical instruments and equipment following established procedures.

Prevent cross-contamination according to established protocols.

Set up decontamination equipment for operation and clean and disinfect equipment and the work area upon shift completion.

Handle infectious waste and linen according to established protocols to ensure continuous workflow and compliance with department, legal, and regulatory standards.

Receive and store supplies, checking stock against requisitions and documenting stock received while reporting discrepancies.

Assist in maintaining par levels of inventory.

Document and fill orders for surgical supplies for patient care areas and deliver supplies when warranted.

Maintain records of equipment inventory use, frequency of servicing, and equipment not meeting specifications that are referred for repair.

Responsible for quality assurance on all sterile supplies and instruments.

Perform daily quality assurance checks on stock levels, sterility dates, and accuracy of procedure carts.

Responsible for critical documentation such as biologicals and sterilizer load sheets.
