Job Summary
The Referral Coordinator is responsible for reviewing and managing new and ongoing patient referrals, coordinating physician referrals, and collaborating with medical staff to ensure authorizations and pre-certifications for special services or facilities that may be needed.

Job Specific Responsibilities
Daily assignments may include but are not limited to :
- Process all incoming / outgoing new patient referrals in a timey manner
- Process all incoming new patient referrals.
- Organize records for all new referrals to include progress notes, labs, scans and slides.
- Organize / Coordinate patient scheduling.
- Follow up with patients to ensure awareness of appointment days / times
- Verify insurance and obtain referrals when needed
- Complete monthly reports and other administrative duties as assigned.
- Participates in activities that promote hospital and / or professional development.
- Referral coordination includes the managing and directing of continual processes to increase access to patient scheduling and appointments, authorization, report building, and other administrative duties as required
- Endoscopy Department : Referral coordinators are required to serve as Greeter 22 hours per year
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- Demonstrated knowledge of insurance verification and precertification processes, preferably for a hospital environment
- 1 year of experience using medical terminology and / or insurance coding

Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Must be able to speak, read, and write English
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and ability to multi-task
- Good understanding of insurance payer policies and rules

Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
The person in this role will have interactions with all departments and employees within UMC. Interactions with external insurance companies, vendors, medical staff may also be required.
Physical Capabilities
Work involves sitting most of the time, but frequently involves walking or standing for brief periods of time. This position requires constant phone use.
Talking and hearing is essential for communicating with physician’s, coworkers, patients and Insurance carriers. Must possess near visual acuity for reading computer screens and printed material.
Lifting and carrying 20-30 lbs is occasional. Typing, keyboarding and reaching in all directions are constant. Hours are occasionally irregular.
Atmosphere can be stressful with emotional demands.
Environmental / Working Conditions
Work area is in a confined office space, well lighted, and subject to varying indoor temperatures
