Wastewater Maintenance Worker 2
This is a semi-skilled, full time non-exempt position under the direct supervision of the Wastewater Collection Superintendent and / or Assistant Superintendent. The Wastewater Maintenance Worker 2 is the journey level in the wastewater utility worker series. Incumbents work within an established framework of set procedures in performing assigned tasks and are expected to perform a variety of journey level maintenance, repair, and construction tasks with general supervision and minimum instruction. Work is normally reviewed only on completion and for overall results. This position is required to be on call periodically throughout the year.

- Performs maintenance, cleaning and repair duties related to the City's sewer collection system.
- Cleans and rods sewer mains and laterals to remove debris from inside pipe. Vacuums debris from lift stations and related structures.
- Performs trenching, shoring, and backfilling.
- Inspects sewage lift stations on a scheduled basis; reads and records flow meters and gauges; learns to perform servicing and repair of pumps, motors, valves and other mechanical and electrical equipment, including pulling and de-ragging pumps.
- Participates and Removes weeds and debris from lift stations, sewer easements, grounds, and outfall lines.
- Performs inspection, construction, maintenance, and repair activities of District infrastructure.
- Televises underground sewer lines and sewer laterals.
- Identifies any signs of blockage / debris that may interrupt flow of the sanitary sewer.
- Identifies major problems with pipes including cracks, damage, holes, and collapsed pipe
- Tests sewer systems for faulty connections or leaks as well as for illegal connections.
- Operates specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium and heavy equipment related to the maintenance and repair of the City's sewer collection system.
- Operates jack hammer and hand power tools.
- Sets traffic control including safety devices, signs, and barricades; ensures safety of public and work crew.
- Provides courteous customer service responding to questions and inquiries from the general public; responds to customer problems or issues and facility repair.
- Contacts the public to inform them of activities and shutdowns; explains applicable rules and regulations
- Installs barricades and routes traffic in a safe manner
- Maintains records of basic operations, maintenance and work performed.
- Maintains public facilities, shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday
- May participate in training new employees in work practices and in how to apply policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations.
- Required to be on call approximately every five weeks.
Typical Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required. Valid Tennessee Drivers' License required.Class B driver's license with the appropriate endorsements preferred.Must have minimum of 2 years' experience and work towards obtaining a valid Grade II Wastewater Collection System Certificate issued by the Tennessee Department Environment and Conservation (TDEC).Supplemental Information
