General Function
The Hy-Vee Human Resources team has an exciting opportunity in a key HR Leadership role to help position the organization as an employer of choice and best place to work.
The Assistant Vice President of Human Resources provides leadership and guidance to the organization's HR operations, developing strategic HR initiatives, effective polices, and efficient processes.
This position will collaborate with executive leadership to develop talent and provide consultation to leaders and other Human Resources professionals on employee relations matters.
The person in this role will serve as a valuable strategic and operational resource to the Senior Vice President of Human Resources.
Reporting Relations
Accountable and Reports to : Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer
Direct Reports : Human Resources / Talent Supervisors, Corporate Human Resources team members
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborates with executive leadership to identify ways to support the organization’s goals through talent management.
- Identifies key performance indicators for the organization’s human resource and talent management functions; assesses the organization’s success and market competitiveness based on these metrics.
- Provides guidance, leadership and oversight to the human resources team; assists with resolution of human resources, compensation, and talent management, questions, concerns, and issues.
- Collaborates with the recruiting, training / education, and engagement teams to ensure a best in class employee experience.
- Partners with the HRIS team to enhance and build best practices for the newly implemented Workday solution.
- Ensures compliance of company policies, procedures, federal and state laws and regulations as it relates to employment.
Advises and educates management regarding compliance and best practices.
Participates in professional development events to maintain knowledge of laws, regulations, best practices and innovation in talent management.
Plans and delivers talent management training for the entire company.
Oversees creation, evaluation, and implementation of job descriptions and performance reviews Monitors and follows up on issues of unemployment cost control for the entire company.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Management, or related field preferred.
- SHRM-CP or SPHR preferred.
- At least 7 years of human resource management experience required, with strategic, talent management preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
- Excellent research and writing skills coupled with strong analytical and interpersonal skills are essential.
- Strong communication and influencing skills : effective listener, ability to connect and influence actions and outcomes with employees at all levels in the organization
- Analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to analyze data, understand trends and develop recommendations for action based on the analysis.
- Ability to identify problems, develop and execute solutions
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervisory responsibilities include instructing, assigning work, reviewing work, planning work of others, maintaining standards, and coordinating activities.
Has the authority to make recommendations on disciplinary actions and hiring decisions.
Financial Responsibility
Is responsible for company assets. Authorized to use outside services as needed. Makes recommendations to supervisor for the disbursement of company funds.
Contacts
Has daily contact with retail management and suppliers / vendors. Deals with other companies and the general public to conduct surveys.
Contacts Wage and Hour to answer questions and to obtain information.

Works with confidential information including personnel records and employee compensation.
