About the Opportunity
We are launching a new ASAM Level 3.7 and 3.5 residential treatment center in Marshall, Missouri, providing 24-hour medically monitored and clinically managed services to adults in recovery from substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. The Director of Nursing (DON) will lead the nursing and medical operations of the facility—ensuring the delivery of safe, trauma-informed, and evidence-based care in accordance with Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) regulations, 9 CSR standards, and ASAM criteria. This is an exciting opportunity to help build a high-acuity treatment program that integrates behavioral health and medical stabilization under a holistic recovery framework. The ideal candidate is a strong nurse leader with a background in behavioral health or substance use treatment, proven management skills, and a passion for creating safe, healing environments for clients and staff alike.
Position Overview
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the clinical, administrative, and operational oversight of all nursing and medical services across the ASAM 3.7 and 3.5 levels of care. This includes supervision of nursing staff, ensuring 24-hour coverage, coordination of medical assessments, medication administration, detox monitoring, and infection control. The DON works collaboratively with the Medical Director, Nurse Practitioners, and Clinical Leadership to ensure quality care, compliance with state regulations, and alignment with ASAM and CARF standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and supervision to all nursing personnel, ensuring quality care and adherence to scope of practice standards.
- Oversee and coordinate nursing coverage for 24-hour medically monitored services, ensuring proper staffing ratios for ASAM 3.7 and 3.5 programs.
- Develop, implement, and maintain nursing policies and procedures compliant with Missouri DHSS / DMH regulations (9 CSR) and ASAM standards.
- Supervise LPNs, RNs, and medical technicians, ensuring safe and accurate delivery of medication administration and detox monitoring.
- Coordinate medical and nursing assessments upon admission, ongoing evaluation, and discharge.
- Monitor and manage client health status, including vital signs, withdrawal symptoms, detoxification progress, and chronic health conditions.
- Maintain and oversee infection control protocols, medication storage, and narcotic inventory logs.
- Collaborate closely with the Medical Director and Nurse Practitioner to ensure timely medical interventions and referrals to higher levels of care when necessary.
- Participate in treatment team meetings, ensuring integration of medical findings into the overall care plan.
- Conduct chart audits, medication audits, and nursing documentation reviews to ensure compliance and quality assurance.
- Provide staff education and in-service training on topics such as medication safety, infection control, trauma-informed care, and emergency response.
- Ensure compliance with all licensing, accreditation, and safety standards, including DMH, DHSS, CARF, and ASAM.
- Serve as the primary liaison with external healthcare providers, laboratories, and pharmacies.
- Model leadership and professionalism while promoting a culture of safety, compassion, and accountability.
Qualifications
Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Missouri required.Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience, with at least one (1) year in behavioral health, detoxification, or residential substance use disorder treatment.Supervisory or management experience in a residential or inpatient setting strongly preferred.Demonstrated familiarity with ASAM 3.5 and 3.7 criteria, withdrawal management, and integrated behavioral health care.Strong knowledge of medication management, detox protocols, infection control, and documentation standards.Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.Must pass background check and pre-employment drug screening.Work Environment
