Trades Worker

The County of Volusia is seeking a Trades Worker for the Road and Bridge Division. This position is located in Daytona Beach, Florida, and will be responsible for semi-skilled tasks in construction, modification and repair of bridges and transportation facilities under close supervision. This position may also be responsible for bascule bridge operation and machinery maintenance, concrete repairs, welding, guardrail installation and skid steer operations relating to infrastructure repair and maintenance. New employees, as a Trades Worker, will be provided an environment to develop and enhance these skills through on-the-job training. Candidate must have no fear of heights and must be able to swim. This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice.

Illustrative duties include : installing and repairing guardrails and bridge related infrastructure; performing mechanical maintenance on bascule bridge machinery; performing bridge repairs; installing and repairing underground drainage piping, structures, and restoration; performing concrete work; performing small engine repair and operating power and hydraulic hand tools; acting as a crew leader in supervisors absence; performing work found in the Trades Worker classification; performing other duties as assigned; being assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs; attending work on a regular and consistent basis; and adhering to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances. Responding to emergency situations and storm recovery operations.

Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or possession of GED and two (2) years of experience in maintenance, mechanical repair, or construction experience in repair of concrete or brick work. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida drivers license. Must obtain a Florida Class B CDL within 6 months of appointment. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements. The preferred candidate, having met minimum requirements, will have a Class B CDL license. Must have experience with construction equipment operation and familiarity with machinery room maintenance and equipment repair.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include : skilled in working from written and oral instructions, blueprints, and rough sketches; ability to perform work in one or more of the trades without close supervision; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to work under stressful conditions; ability to interact effectively with others; and must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

ADA requirements include : physical demands of medium work to heavy work. Ability to see (depth perception, color, acuity), hear, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach overhead, climb, grasp, lift, carry, pull, push up to 100 pounds. Mental demands include : ability to read and comprehend work orders, safety instructions, maps, blueprints, mechanical drawings, instructions, procedures, memos. Ability to perform shop math. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data and details to others. Environmental demands include : inside and outside work. May require exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), hazardous conditions, chemicals, dust, confined spaces and poor ventilation.
