Transportation Engineer Inspector

Job Summary
Primarily inspect contractor construction activity to ensure compliance with the project plans and specifications. The ideal candidate should have a broad technical and practical knowledge of construction methods and practices.
The Engineer / Inspector will work closely with the Resident Engineer and Office Engineer to ensure that all contract requirements for safety, quality, schedule and cost are met.
Other responsibilities include :
- Examine and interpret construction plans, specifications and standards
- Collect engineering data, sample construction materials and perform testing
- Inspect non-structural construction operations
- Assist in contract change order (CCO) preparation, review and analysis
- Assist in review and enforcement of Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan
- Estimate and calculate construction bid item quantities for progress payment
- Assist in review of contractor submittals including work plans and shop drawings
- Assist in review and enforcement of temporary traffic control submittals and systems
- Provide oversight of activities related to encroachment permits and utility relocations
- Participate in constructability reviews and value analysis studies
- Perform labor compliance interviews
- Perform daily field inspections and produce daily reports, logs and as-built records
- Perform basic construction survey to confirm layout.
- Assist in compliance with safety and health requirements
- Monitor construction activities in compliance with permit and regulatory requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Civil degree or equivalent
- Minimum of five years’ experience in roadway construction inspection of highways or public works projects
Preferred Qualifications
- CA PE license EIT certification
- ACI grade I certification
- Excellent communication and presentation skills (oral and written) for interface with clients, project team and contractors, problem-solving skills and responsiveness
- Knowledge of Caltrans Standard Plans, Standard Specifications and Construction Manual
- Knowledge of MS Office Suite and ability to learn project document control systems
- Knowledge of CPM software (Primavera P3, P6)
- OSHA 10 or 30 Construction Certification
