Ohio Wesleyan University, a selective, private, undergraduate liberal art, residential institution founded in 1842 and located just 20 miles north of Columbus, is seeking candidates for the position of Summer Camp Counselor.

This is a salaried, temporary position with no benefits.

About the candidate :

Candidate should have experience with supervision in safety of youth, ability to work in Google Suite, ability to organize programs and team games / activities, and foster an environment that supports campers’ independence, self-esteem, and relationships in the summer camp environment.

Candidate should demonstrate positive energy, be solution-oriented, and hold yourself and others accountable. Ability to participate and assist other staff and effectively communicate problems or concerns to lead counselor a must.

About us :

Candidate will be expected to work both indoors and outdoors on-campus at a university inside and outside dorms, educational buildings, and cafeteria.

This could involve assisting in activities, leading groups, and providing guidance for campers. Collaborative work environment that actively encourages safety, success, and support.

Job Summary :

The Counselor facilitates the daily management of campers, in particular a group of 10-12 campers who are their family group.

Counselor shall be responsible for creating and implementing high quality, camper-focused activities during down time and transition times during camp, in collaboration with the lead and other counselors.

The counselor works directly with the lead counselor and other counselors to help perform all duties relative to the coordination and management of all campers, camp staff, and special events related to OWjL Camp.

Responsibilities and duties :

  • Facilitates recreation time, leads one family group, and facilitates / oversees evening activities
  • Attends orientation and completes pre-orientation tasks
  • Performs dorm set-up, tear-down, and clean-up
  • Attends daily counselor meetings
  • Leads campers to events, promotes positivity, and love of learning
  • Records and maintains appropriate records for injuries / incidents in conjunction with the camp nurse, social worker, lead counselor, and camp directors

Factors contributing success :

  • Applicants must be 18 years old
  • Applicants will preferably have experience working with youth
  • Excellent leadership ability, communication skills and problem-solving abilities
  • Applies skills learned in orientation to camp situations
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations
  • Availability to attend pre-camp orientation
  • Be present during all weeks of camp
